my son (15 months) has a mild cold. runny nose, cough and low grade fever. 100.8 recally. can i give echinacea for babies to get his though this better?

According : According to the national institute of health center for complimentary and alternative medicine, there is no evidence that shows that echinacea is protective against illness or speeds recovery.  It was a very popular supplement 5 years ago, but as research started to show that it was ineffective in a adults and especially children, it began to fall out of favor.  I would not recommend using it children.

The best methods for treating congestion in an infant/toddler are saline nasal drops, nasal suctioning with a bulb syringe and a cool or warm mist humidifier. There are no safe cough or cold medications for children under 4 years of age.

If your child seems to be having difficulty breathing, call their doctor right away.

Anytime a child has difficulty breathing (respiratory distress), they need immediate medical attention. The signs of respiratory distress are:

-rapid breathing (more than 60 times a minute) 
-grunting or gasping with breathing 
-flaring of the nostrils 
-working hard and using extra muscles to breathe such as sucking in at the neck or under the rib cage 
-blue or dusky coloring 
-change in speech or level of alertness.

Unlikely: If you have a reason for that fever--like flu, ear infection, etc--then these low grade temps are probably not related to or affecting your pregnancy.

Black BM sick baby.: If baby is having black stools you should call your pediatrician as baby could have internal bleeding.

Nasal saline: Nasal saline drops or spray is safe and also effective when used several ( 8 to10) times a day.   Suctioning the nose is also helpful.

See your doctor: This could be merely a common cold with the symptoms you are describing.  Saline nose drops and suctioning gently with upright positioning and steamy baths may help to weather this illness. The cough may also represent a phenomena known as bronchiolitis-head cold with some wheezing.  Some docs may recommend a nebulizer with medication used in asthma care for the deep cough/wheeze.

100.2 degrees orless: 38 degrees celcius or 100.4 degrees f is considered the temperature above low grade.

How high: Its best to know what you consider a fever. In the medical community we really dont consider anything under 100.5 a fever, that being said a low grade fever can be a sign of infection of any inflamatory proccess not associated with an infection. If your disoriented, please see a doctor as soon as you can.

Normal: This is still within the range of normal temperature.  The body temperature normally rises and falls throughout the day.  There is no need to worry if you have no other symptoms.
