Phlegm is mucus: The phlegm or mucus you secrete is normal even in a non- diseased state. Even without an illness you can produce excess mucus because of allergy - allergic rhinitis. Or you can produce it without an identifiable irritant - non-allergic rhinitis. This is a very common thing that i see patients for on a daily basis... It may just be you.

deep and painful cough with sudden onset has persisted for over 5 weeks. comes and goes throughout day, sometimes producing phlegm. possible causes?

Possibilities..: An acute cough, especially with fever and sputum production, could be due to acute bronchitis or even pneumonia . The continued cough could be related to bronchospasm which can occur after an infection like acute bronchitis and pneumonia. See your doctor since bronchospasm can be treated with bronchodilator and possibly steroid inhalers. Smoking cessation will reduce airway inflammation.

Wheezes: Wheezes are high pitched sounds coming from mucus filled airway.The force of air  through mucus creates the sound of wheeze, like a wind instrument..

Requires exam: and evaluation. Possibilities include lung   infection/inflammation allergies, reflux of stomach acid, low grade viral infection  etc. and requires exam , x-ray and possible pulmonary function testing.

Happens a lot: I have seen this happen a lot. It may be from the increased saliva production from eating, or maybe even from transient reflux.

Cold or asthma: Your symptoms are typical of the common cold (viral infection of the respiratory tract) especially if you had a runny nose or low grade fever.  If a common cold your symptoms usually will improve in 3-7 days.  If your symptoms last longer or you have a history of asthma, your asthma may be experiencing a flare and need treatment.

i was diagnosed with pneumonia 11 weeks ago and still have a very tight phlegm producing cough with shortness of brth at night wat is this?

Few possibilities..: Even with a cold you can still have some residual cough and congestion, that is one possibility.If you have same symptoms it might be either antibiotic did not cover germ that caused pneumonia or time for treatment was not long enough. In that case you need to be seen ASAP.Other reason is that this is another type of infection not related to that illness you had before.Follow up w/ your doctor.

See another doctor: persistent bloody phlegm in a smoker needs a workup to rule out cancer.  Find a doctor willing to give an exam to rule this out.
