Burning and itching: Hemorrhoid symptoms range from mild discomfort to burning, itching, bleeding, pressure, mass or lump in the perianal area. The symptoms can be managed with soaking, creams, antifungals, and Lidocaine gels applied locally. Sudden and more severe pain may be a fissure. Fissures are a tear and scar responce.

Depends : Internal hemrrhoids are located inside the anus and come out with straining and then go back in. When really bad they just stay out and can't be pushed back in. Typically they are soft and mushy but can be hard if they clot off.

Do not use tobacco, alcohol, weed or street drugs in any form. 
Practice safe sex, if you have sex.

Bright red: Hemorrhoidal bleeding is usually bright red and without clots. That being said, all bright red bleeding from the rectum is not necessarily due to hemorrhoids. All bleeding should be evaluated and diagnosed and treated by a physician.

Varies: If it is just swollen, it may look just like a boil and be red and tender near anus, if it is thrombosed it will be even more tender and appear as a dark purple grape near the anus. If you have either, get it checked by an expert.

See a doctor: The only way you will be able to tell is to see a doctor, who will do a history and physical exam.  Sometimes that kind of pain is due to something else called an anal fissure as well.  Treatment is necessary, so call or see a doctor today.

If it thomboses or clots, pain is increased and it will have apurple color and be firm/hard to the touch. If not sure what the swelling is, get an expert to evaluate and offer treatment options.
