i have ligament damage due to an untreated ankle fracture the bones have healed, will the ligaments heal or do i need surgery?

The same way : Your bones have healed the ligaments will heal. The question is how will they heal. We're they torn, did they get "shredded" and are they repairable on their own. You would know if you still have pain or if the ankle is unstable. If so you need to see the doc. If the ligaments are so damaged there are ways a doc can stabilize the bones and find ways to recreate the job of the ligaments.

: The surgeon usually has a preference on the type of anesthesia to use. But taking the patient’s request and concerns have to be considered. Spinal anesthesia is another option to consider. Have a discussion with your doctor about your anesthesia

Hardware: Hardware is present to stabilize the fracture, better support and stabilization than the cast, he will check xray at 4 months to assess fracture healing

Anatomic: Not if the repair is anatomic and you didn't suffer an injury to the articular cartilage of the talus at the time of the injury. It's usually impossible to tell if there has been any cartilage damage actutely and if there is it can take decades to be experienced clinically or be seen on plain films.

Common: This is common after such surgery.  You may continue to have swelling for several months, particularly after activity.  Using a compression stocking or ankle brace may help.

: Such a sprain of the ankle is as or more serious than some actual ankle fractures. To avoid ending up with chronic ankle problems for the rest of your life ( I've seen such patients) get an orthopedic surgeon with a special interest in complex ankle injuries to treat you. You may have to get one a the department of orthopedic surgery at a university hospital.

how hard is the recovery for ankle fracture surgery?

Accepted Answer

Moderate: Depending on the fracture shape, usually screws, maybe a plate are used to reduce and stabilize the fracture.  Most are placed in a cast or minimally an orthoboot, on crutches for 4-8 weeks. If torn ligaments are involved it may add a couple of weeks.  It is dependant on the type of fracture you have.

Fx and Dr dependent: It will depend on the type of fracture and the skill of the surgeon. One hour to 2 hours will be an average estimate.
