A lot!: Lifestyle changes are important like not smoking, weight control with regular exercise.   You can use medication if no contraindications, try a back support, & activity modification.  If no better, then see your doctor for further evaluation and treatment. Exercise can include walking, elliptical and stairmaster machines to start and then increase it along with gentle stretching and core strength.

Core: You first do want to make sure that if you have injured your back you do not do exercises that will aggravate it.  That being said, most exercises for the back involve a gentle stretching program followed by a strengthening program of the core muscles that support the back and pelvis. Aquatic exercises &.: It is really hard to tell what you should or not do since i don't know the type, extent and duration of your injury. It safe to say that any activities making your pain worse should be avoided/minimized. I suggest speaking to doc and/or trainer/therapist to start some exercises and then you can do them at home etc...Often aquatic exercises have less stress on back. Consult doc. Good luck.

Yes especially if : It leads to a deformity causing a loss of what us called a center line of balance creating a condition that makes the muscles work harder to keep you upright leading to muscular pain or even an arthritic spine.  An injury to the nerve tissue can also lead to long term pain.

Back injury: With less activity, you need to pay attention to your caloric intake. They are many guides available in books and online to accomplish your goal. You should also seek out the help of a local dietician or nutritionist to assist you. Quick guide to cut out the sweets and desserts and cut back on the portions until you can seek some help.
Work with a pt to develop an exercise without back strain.

Give it time as most: Resolve even if due to a disc herniation.  Modify activites to reduce stresses on your lower back, keep trim, don't smoke but continue with exercise but more with flexibility, cardiovascular routines and core strenghtening while laying off the weight lifting until the pain has resolved.  Over the counter medication can help if no contraindications as can local therapies like heat and massage.

No: No, the health benefits to exercising are numerous.  May need to modify program to be less stressful on back, at least temporarily.  Could consider working with therapist or trainer.  Could consider water exercises as well, which are generally better tolerated by the back.

Staying active: Is very important no matter where your pain is. If the activity does not bother you and you enjoy it.. Just do it.
