Mono: mono doesn't usually flare up. Mono can come with complications including chronic fatigue and muscle aches. Try to make sure to drink a lot of water, do excercise to keep your body strong and eat healthy

Yes: Early symptoms are severe fatigue, 
headache, sore throat, chills, followed by  fever and muscle aches. After day or two, swollen nodes, jaundice, measles like rash, and sore left upper abdomen secondary to enlarged spleen, and red spots on roof of mouth.

Mononucleosis: Mononucleosis can present with a maculopapular rash (red spots and bumps). My question would be if this was the same type of rash you had prior to getting Mono?

Yes: Rash is only one symptom of mono. Other common symptoms would be swollen gland at many site, feeling tired and many other sign. If you think you have mono, you should see your doctor because other conditions could have similar symptoms and your doctor needs to sort them out.

Quit taking it: This med has no value in treating mono, so it can be stopped. If you were to need an antibiotic for another reason, the doc could select an alternative.

Unlikely: A pink, measles-like rash can occur and is more likely if one takes the medicines Ampicillin or Amoxicillin for a throat infection.  This occurs usually when one is actively infected with the virus (ebv). 3 months is a long time and so most likely unrelated. Best thing to do is to have it checked.

Thanks for asking!: Typically you will get hives in approximately 70% of the cases i believe - we often refer to it as urticarial.

why does amoxicillin cause rash with mono?

Accepted Answer

Not certain: I do not believe that they have yet been able to determine exactly the mechanism why this occurs, but it does in many cases.  It can actually be used as a 'poor man's' way to diagnose it.  Not the best way though.  This reaction is not a classic allergy and people can still use Amoxil (amoxicillin) safely again afterwards if they could use it beforehand.  Ampicillin does the same but is not used as often.
