Depends: Breast density on a mammogram can have a lot of meanings. It is a normal and natural finding in younger women, and does not have much meaning. Density can make the mammogram more difficult for the radiologist to read, and they may recommend other tests too, such as an ultrasound. A new density, when comparing a past mammogram to a new one, may mean further evaluation is needed.

A lot of Grey: Mammograms are great screening tests for cancer but they have many limitations, including finding many "densities" that turn out to be "shadows" on more careful examination.  Fda-approved breast centers & their radiologists are experts at sorting thru this--have your doctor review this with you and decide if further evaluation (ie, ultrasound, surgical consultation)  is necessary.

No-opposite: Typically it means there is not as much fat. As we age and have less estrogen the breasts get fatty replaced which makes them not as dense and easier to see abnormalities on the mammogram.

No abnormality: It generally means that the original appearance on the screening mammogram was due to a coincidental overlapping of normal breast structures, causing the false appearance of a possible abnormality. On the diagnostic images,the overlapping structures spread out and look normal again, proving that the original "abnormality" was not real.  A true mass would not flatten or spread out on the diag mammo

Probably OK: Standards for mammography results recently changed, with expert guidelines now advising that patients be informed if dense tissue makes it harder to see small abnormalties. However, the risk of this usually is very low. If you are at special risk (e.g. strong family history of breast cancer), your insurance may cover MRI to assure all is well. Discuss with your doctor and/or the radiologist.

When we see "indeterminate mass" in a radiology report, generally that means whatever the radiologist saw was too small or it looks blurred against the surrounding tissue. Normal breast tissue can also mimic the appearance of a mass in women your age and repeat studies are often needed to get a better image for the radiologist to review. Hope this helps

Normal finding: Dense breasts on mammogram are usually seen in younger women with fuller breasts. I wonder why you would be getting a screening mammogram at age 35? Do you have a family history of breast cancer?

Breast pain: Breast cancer is generally not painful and has a characteristic mammogram appearance, often with calcifications or stippling.  Ask your doctor to interpret your mammogram result.  He/she should recommend a biopsy if there is a high suspicion of malignancy.
