Depends: You may have had an anovulatory cycle.  You may have an infection.  You may have a medicaiton interaction.  You may ahve many other things.  This will depend on your age, your state of health, any co-morbid health conditons, you state of nutrition and many other issues.  It is usually due to not ovulating this cycle.  See your gyn if there is concern.

Spotting: PCOS can make it hard to get pregnant.  It is one of the most common causes of not making an egg each month.  You may need to see your Gyn doc for some help getting pregnant.  The pink/orange spotting may be breakthrough bleeding.  This is common with PCOS.  You should also do a pregnancy test and make sure you aren't pregnant.  Best wishes!

If this is a recurring problem you should be evaluated. Infections ;  hormonal changes can cause spotting. If there is a concern for pregnancy then do  a home pregnancy test .  There are many options available to help regulate the menstrual cycle. Schedule a visit.

If not pregnant, other causes of a late or missed period include:  excessive weight loss or weight gain, increased exercising, emotional stress, having an illness, traveling, medicines (especially birth control pills), hormonal disorders, etc…  a visit to one’s ob-gyn doctor is a good idea if symptoms are persistent, recurring, or worrisome.

Possibilities: Some women occasionally miss a cycle, which may indicate they did not release an egg as expected. That would lead to an estrogen dominant buildup of uterine tissue &amp; potential heavy menses when that was overcome in time. Cycles are usually driven by estrogen early but other hormones released by the egg follicle later that trigger the end when pregnancy does not occur.

Prolonged : Prolonged vaginal bleeding not related to your period is called dysfunctional uterine bleeding. Depending on your age, there are a variety of things that could be causing it such as a hormone imbalance, annovulation, pregnancy, pelvic inflammatory disease, uterine fibroids, trauma, menopause, inherited bleeding disorders, and rarely, cancer. You should contact your doctor for an evaluation. It's important that the cause of your bleeding be found in order to give you the proper treatment to stop it. Odds are, it's a hormone imbalance.  You may need a different birth control pill to prevent the prolonged bleeding from happening again.  Good luck!

AUB: Abnormal uterine bleeding can have many different causes. People who do extreme exercises, increased stress, hormonal imbalance, endometriosis, obesity. I would suggest gyn evaluation if it continues.
