my baby is teething and 5 teeth are coming out all at the same time. is this normal? how often should we brush his teeth and what are safe toothpastes that we can use for him? he is 16 months old with allergies to milk protein and eggs. thank you?

: Tooth eruption patterns vary widely &amp; this should not be considered worrisome. Some favor fluoride free paste in early childhood but I like a soft bristle brush loaded with a kernel of rice sized amount of regular fluoridated paste for 2x/d use.

Protein: Protein doesn't cause tooth decay.  Decay is caused by bacteria taking sugars out of foods and converting sugars into acids, which etch the calcium out of tooth enamel.  If you child has teeth present, and especially if baby has celebrated 1st b'day, it's time for Dental Examination.  Search out a pediatric Dental Specialist who can help you with diet, oral hygiene, development, fluoride, etc.

Find out: the only way to know if you have cavities is to have a dental exam and X-rays

: Soft foods are good to eat. What ever foods you eat make sure you rinse out afterwards so food particles don't get into the extraction site. Keep area clean and follow post extraction instructions.

Not necessarily: You just may have post operative swelling... But it is impossible to tell over the internet, sight unseen. That's why you need to call your oral surgeon for a follow up appointment. You might have an infection.

Age: Reaction of a baby to teeth vary depending on age.  Teething to infection to a plethora of other diagnoses is feasible. A complete exam is important.

Small quantities : Small quantities are safe to use, but i would only use it if absolutely necessary (if needed to fall asleep). The effect is only very temporary. Give him something cold to chew on instead (frozen washcloth, teething ring) during the day. This will feel good and help the teeth come in as well.

what is the best way to stop teething pain? is orajel safe to use on babies? i haven't really heard of anything else that can help babies with teething pain.

Accepted Answer

There : There are small teething rings made to be frozen that you can let you child chew on.  Sometimes a clean wash rag will do the trick also.  Orajel is generally not recommended for infants because if too much is applied it can be swallowed and cause temporary numbness of the tongue and throat making it difficult for them to swallow.

Contact you pediatrician for recommendations on what analgesic you can use.

Teething: Most babies get their first tooth around six months  and then a new tooth about every month or so - a typical 1 year old may have six teeth.  However some babies are born with teeth (natal teeth) and some babies don’t get their first tooth until they are 1,  there is a wide range for normal development.  Kids may lose their first tooth around age 5, barring trauma.
