Hello, : Hello, when i first looked at your question i thought about fungus. However, if your sock is also turning orange that makes me wonder about coloring agents.  Sometimes, you can absorb dyes that are are used to color your shoes.  If your nails are pressing against the shoe directly, I am reasoning that both the nail and sock  could absorb color (especially if the shoe became wet). I see that you do not have a specialty noted. I will tab this for podiatry, as one of the podiatrists may also have ideas about this.

Itchy feet: Sorry you have to go thru that :-(  she might be suffering from tinea pedis or.....Athletes foot.  This is a very common condition that can cause all sorts of discomfort.   A mild topical anti fungal may help or topical steroid cream.  If the condition continues ask for a podiatry referral.

Medication: There are no known "natural" methods for dealing with atoenail fungus. Treatment consist of at least 12 weeks of antifungals

: Swelling around toe nail indicate Inflammation or Infection that need attention. The possibility of toenail disintegration besides suggesting Trauma also call Nutritional deficiency syndrome into question. In summary a visit to PCP is indicated soonest to avoid potential complications like Blood Infection (Sepsis) if trauma and infection have compromised the toe.

Maybe fungus?: When patients (and many non-dermatologist physicians) see this problem they automatically assume it's a fungal infection but this is only true about 50% of the time.  There are several other non-infectious causes of thickened nails including psoriasis, chronic friction/trauma, and hereditary causes.  See a dermatologist who may want to take a sample of the nails for a fungal culture and/or biopsy.

: You didn't specify whether the lines run across the nails or from matrix to tip. The latter is more common, and if they are narrow, usually indicates a small benign mole growing in the matrix. If they are wide, or getting wider or darker, see a dermatologist to make sure they are nothing to worry about.
