Yes &amp; no: I think the chances of it really being ringworm if you have had it for years is small. There are several skin disorders that can have a similar appearance. However, you can get ringworm from the soil, persons or animals, so the possibility remains.

Ringworm: If the rash is ringworm (red, marginated, circumscribed,

Yes, But...: Ringworm is a fungal infection of the skin, similar to the fungus that causes athlete's foot and jock itch.  It can affect any skin on any part of the body.  However, on your penis, it may also be overflow from jock itch or even yeast under the foreskin.

Unlikely to help: Neosporin is designed as an antibiotic that can kill bacteria, it is not helpful against the fungus of ringworm.

They are similar: There are several available--lamisil, lotrimin, tinactin (tolnaftate) etc..Are similar in efficacy. You don't really need strong, just have to be the right medicine. The strength available are appropropriate/adequate to treat commom skin fungal/ringworm infections (not beard/scalp areas). If not better in about 2 wks, consult doc for proper diagnosis/treatment. Stop worrying: Ringworm fungi are everywhere. It's dumb luck and nobody knows exactly why one person catches it at a particular time. I'm glad you've got a good friend; don't worry about it.

It could be due to: This could be an infection.  We see this in conditions like Lyme Disease and fungus infections you need to discuss this with your physician now so that immediate treatment can be  instituted.

Ringworm: Ringworm is the common or lay term for a common superficial infection of the skin caused by a fungus (actually several types of fungus). It's name comes from the fact that the fungus tends to cause a circular patch of scaling scan with a slightly raised and redder border making it look like a ring. It can be treated with ordinary otc anti-fungal medications.

Antifungal med: Ringworm is a skin infection secondary to fungus. Medications such as Miconazole applied to the area as directed on the package should be successful. These medications, creams and lotions, are usually in the "foot" section of a pharmacy or grocery store. You should be certain of what you are treating and if it does not improve with treatment see your pcp.
