Hilar mass: Hilar mass is usually due to swollen lymph glands in the chest cavity. There are several reasons for swollen glands such as infections, cancer and sarcoidosis.

Many: Fungi like candida, blastomyces, coccidioidomycoses or paracocci can all cause infiltrates or processes that look like masses. Tb itself can cause a mass-like effect of tuberculoma and even pneumonia can cause mass like infiltrates and a scar later that involutes to look like a mass. Parasites do too. So we have to rely on symptoms, risks and the work up to make diagnoses.

Absolutely: A mass in the lung can irritate the lining of the lung, also called the pleura. This can either cause a charp pain in the chest called pleuritic pain or alternatively, a mass can press against the lining of the airway which will cause an irritation and a cough. Usually the cough will be dry to distinguish from bronchitis, although this is not always true depending on the level of obstruction.

Many things: The general categories are Infection, Cancer, Non-cancer tumors, collapsed lung, blood, fluid, and more.  The radiologist should be able to narrow down the potential causes from the appearance.  Ask for a detailed radiology report.  If this doesn't satisfy you, speak with your primary care doctor.

Xray can't see all: A mass large enough to cause chest pain is not likely to be missed on a properly done xray, but some very small ones at the edgesof lungs/chest wall can cause pain and not be seen on an xray. A thorough history and physical exam can help teasing musculoskeletal pain which is not visible on the xray--muscle/tendon strain or ligament sprain cannot be seen. Consult your doc. Good luck.

can a tummer of 1.4cm on lt adrenal gland and 1cm on rt adrenal gland cause pain in mid to lower back and upper stomach under ribs. i do have 5 small nodules on lungs and a thumb size mass on each rib. i stay in pain?

: Back pain,yes but upper abdominal pain not likely. With this constellation of pathologies, you should have an endocrinologist and pulmonologist involved in your care along with your primary care physician. If malignancy has been identified, an oncologist is also needed.

Targeted therapy: Newer targeted therapy agents can be quite beneficial for some patients with lung cancer. This is especially true in female  never smokers who may have selected mutations that can be easily targeted with these drugs. However, unfortunately stage IV lung cancer is not curable.

Pulmonologist: I feel that you may have sarcoidosis and should be evaluated by a pulmonologist so that an accurate diagnosis will be made  through appropriate testing and proper treatment will be obtained.

i have pneumonia, my chest x-ray is showing a hilar mass or hilar lymphadenopathy. would this be caused my the pneumonia?

Talk to your doctor: This is a potentially very severe situation.  The adenopathy or hilar mass may be causing a post-obstructive pneumonia, or the hilar lesions and the pulmonary infiltrates may be part of a single entity such as sarcoidosis.   This should be discussed at length with the doctor caring for you.
