No drugs!: Please do not give any medications to your 9 month old. While it has been common practice in the past, and physicians often recommended drugs for cough and cold, recent studies have shown they do not help and may in fact cause harm. No child under 2 years old should take any cough/cold meds, including over the counter. Keep child hydrated, humidify air, and if it persists get evaluated for cause.

See below: No decongestant or antihistamine is safe for infants.  Humidification, steam from running the shower and hydration might get you through the night.  If severe take her to pediatric er.  If stable go to pediatrician tomorrow.

Avoid Cold medicines: Cough in young children is extremely frustrating for parents. Unfortunately cough medications used in adults don't work in children. Decongestants in combination with cough medications can actually be harmful. 
Using guafenesin may be helpful to help secretions stay loose. Increasing fluid intake and humidity in the air can definitely help. Honey (for kids over 12 months) may be a natural remedy.

A cold?: How is your baby otherwise?  Cough can come from nasal drainage, reactive airways (baby asthma), and reflux as well.  We used to think that these babies had 'colic' but some of them have allergies and others have reflux soming up and harassing them.  Check with your pediatrician and see what direction to take from here.

I never use it: I find any scented material is more of an air pollutant in small kids than helpful. There airways are different than adults and often become more congested and or drain more when fragrances are used. I basically never recommend it .I can remember the stinky stuff my mom used when I was young, and still hate the smell.

Simple measures: If babies are active, happy, and only mildly symptomatic, they may be fine at home. Humidified air may help. Tylenol is sometimes needed for 1-2 days. Otherwise, a pediatrician can evaluate. Such coughs are usually viral. Much less likely, they are bacterial. Viruses like RSV, Parainfluenza and Influenza can hit babies pretty hard. Be sure no vaccines were missed (such as pneumonia and flu shots).

Some babies or: children have very sensitive cough and gag reflexes  and may be triggered by very benign things like crying.  As long as there is no wheezing, difficulty breathing or color change, this doesn't sound like anything too concerning in and of itself.  However, if it persists, you may want to discuss this with your child's pediatrician.

Cough remedy: Suck out the mucus in his nose with a bulb syringe, use saline nose drops 4 times daily, take him into the washroom, turn on the hot shower and let him breath in the hot steam. Elevate his matress with a wedge and keep the vaporizer on where he sleeps. If the cough does not improve in several days check him over by his pediatrician push fluids, reduce milk.

Humidity: A humidifier will help, as will using saline drops right in the nose to loosen the mucous. If someone is taking a shower, someone else sitting in bathroom in the steam from the shower is also helpful. Put the humidifier right next to the baby's crib. Putting it across the room doesn't do much good. In this day and pandemic, you might also consider getting infant tested for Covid-19.

RSV, influenza: Many of the winter viruses are still circulating around and could be the cause of his ongoing cough. Have him rechecked to make sure he is not wheezing, developed or worsened pneumonia or other causes of chronic cough. Make sure to get flu vaccine every year!
