i have bruising on my lower back but i havent hit it on anything. it follows the vertebraes but i havent had any impact on my back. what could be causing this?

Varies: Hard to say with out more info.  Was there an injury?  How long has it been going on?  Any other symptoms?  A detailed history, exam, and appropriate studies would likely yield the diagnosis, I would not hesitate to be seen.

RICE: Rest, ice, compression (binder) and elevation.  NSAIDS can also help.  Limit strenuous activities for work and play (including weight bearing exercise) until symptoms improve, then gradual return to activity.

That is somewhat : variable depending on location of injury, degree and overall health of the patient as well as their pain tolerance. Consider what accomadations can be made at the school for the patient and any transport involved especially if using any narcotic pain medication.  If not driving and accommodations can be made then as soon as patient is comfortable.

Sure: It depends on the details of the injury. For example, a person might just bruise or break a spinous process (one of the pointy bony parts that stick out on the spine) without hurting the spinal cord. Likewise, a person can bruise his skull without bruising his brain. Or, he can bruise his leg bone without damaging the bone marrow inside. Many things are possible in life.

Bruising?: Presumably this is not traumatic. Consider Henoch-Schoënlein Purpura (anaphylactoid Purpura); Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpera (ITP). Go see a hematologist today!

Good question.: I would suggest that you consult with an Osteopathic Physician (D.O,) and a physical therapist  who specializes in sports medicine. You are too young to let this get worse and have more problems later on.

Want more to hurt?: It's hard to say without getting a full history., it's possible that some vertebrae in your spine are mis-aligned, or it could be a sign of something else.  Depending on how long, how painful, and whether there are any associated symptoms, it's best to see your primary care doctor or a doc that does manipulative therapy to give a history of your issues and get an examination of your spine.

i have ankylosing spondylitis and have experienced a tender vertebra for the last 6 months. could this be progressive as? other as symptoms are mild.

Possibly: With A/S your vertebral joints cannot heal as quickly when strained, hence, become inflamed and tender more easily. Speak with your rheumatologist about reducing the inflammation with alternative (turmeric) or prescription agents NSAIDS. Pain docs can also inject  specific joints to ease your burden. TNS units, topical anti inflammatory (flector patch) agents can help too.

Nerve impingement can be caused by being sandwiched between two spinal bones, pressed by a bulging disc or encroached upon by bony overgrowth.
