Sometimes fertility treatment gives you information about your body that is important that would would never have known. The principle disadvantage is that some treatments can increase your risk of multiple pregnancies.

See your OBGYN first: At age 23 you have plenty of time so it's OK to first seek help with your OBGYN. In many cases, young women have problem with ovulation that can be easily corrected with medications such as Clomid (clomiphene). Your OBGYN can start basic workup such as a semen analysis for your partner, a HSG to check your tubes and uterus, and order hormone tests to check your thyroid, etc.

Depends: A couple with no risk factors or medical problems should try for about 6 to 12 months before getting evaluated and considering treatment - 6 months if the woman is 35 or older and 12 months if she is younger.  However, if you have medical or gynecologic problems like endometriosis, irregular periods, previous surgery, etc, you should see someone now.

Healthy eggs: The biggest reason is a problem with egg health, such as aneuploidy.  Most eggs do not have the capacity to produce a pregnancy.  Some have missing parts of the genetic recipe for pregnancy.

Great question!: The first step is to find a good fertility specialist:  someone board certified or eligible in reproductive endocrinology.  Once the initial evaluation is performed your doctor will recommend treatment. Often fertility drugs (pills or injections) with IUI are the first step. Ivf is often another option. Remember you should know options, alternatives and success rates.  You should be comfortable.

IVF is best: The safest from a medical and legal aspect is to use a third party egg where the surrogate has no genetic link to the conception and is inseminated with sperm (ivf).  The egg-sperm can come from you (the intended parents) or from a donor egg-sperm.

Inseminating surrogates with the intended parents' sperm is the least expensive, but if the surrgate changes her mind, one could tough legal battles.

Controversial.: There are so many factors that play into fertility other than age. Of course you'll hear stories about people your age who get pregnant but it's a function of ovulatory status. Are you having a period every month? Also, are you in good health to carry pregnancy in general? Consult a gyn for testing if not having regular periods and for endometriosis follow up.

Fertility: If you haven't been working with a fertility speciality- recommend consultation. At age 39 fertility rates are dropping.

why is buying brandname drugs from other countries bad? i need them for fertility treatment

Accepted Answer

Not worth the risk: I don't advise getting fertility drugs from outside the us as they may be improperly stored, expired or even counterfeit. Pills may be stable in storage but could be labeled in another language . Injectables like follistim, Gonal-F have equivalents in other countries but these meds need refrigeration. No way to tell if they are exposed to heat unless your treatment doesn't work, not worth the risk.
