Not really : Sorbitol, mannitol, maltitol and many other 'sugar alcohols' can still be digested into acids by oral bacteria to cause decay.  Xylitol is the only artifical sweetener that the oral bacteria cannot break down and it actually remineralizes the teeth.  Chewing gum with recaldent will also strengthen teeth.

If you're asking should you give children artificial sweeteners, check with your pediatrician.  To prevent cavities see dentist regularly, brush 2x/day or more 2 full minutes each time, have a balance Fluoride regimen, clean between teeth daily, and consider sealants.  Ask your dentist.

My recommendation is to get the app myfitnesspal and use it to enter everything you eat and drink and do for 2 weeks.  Then lower calorie balance so you are eating 500 less that your average every day and watch it melt away.
