Home Birth: The + is friendly environment. The disadvantage is that childbirth can be associated with potential problems/complications for the mom & baby, a home doesn't have necessary medical equipment nor personnel to deal with obstetrical emergencies! i strongly advise against this. You can find a user friendly obstetrical facility that can provide the comfort of a home birth with security to provide care.

Please check w a : Tricare supervisor to get accurate ; complete information. Regulations can change. I believe that a home birth may be covered if it is done by a certified nurse midwife (cnmw) ; you have tricare prime remote ( &gt;50 miles from mtf). If your MTF doesn't have labor/ delivery services i believe you can have your primary care provider provide a specific referral for that cnmw. Some women may change to &gt;.

Many pros & cons: In general i advocate of home birth but it is  not for everyone. Home births have much lower risk of c-section & tend to be much less expensive but one must be prepared for a natural birth.Most births throughout history have been home births.It's important to have a good midwife & access to a hospital if needed. Home birth: I'm afraid all I can give you are cons as I feel this is very unsafe.  I am quite jaded though as one who has delivered over 500 babies, many of whom would have died if delivered at home.  This does not include 3 of my grandchildren who's birth I witnessed who would have died at home.  There are just too many things that can happen with a "normal" birth that without trained people and equipment.

Educate yourself: Many couples enjoy taking a prenatal childbirth class. There are so many changes both physical and emotion during pregnancy. Delivery can be scary too. Classes help you prepare for what is to come. It can help with anxiety. You will learn what to expect during the delivery and help you prepare to take care of your little one. Classes also help get the dad involved. I highly recommend attending.

Don't go to the hosp: Anybody can have a baby at home by not going to the hospital. But unless you have a professional there during labor and delivery, and afterwards, you risk a dangerous result for both you and your baby. Talk to your OB-GYN and see what is possible in your case for safe settings for delivery in your area, a birthing center may be available.

Possbile problems: Home births go fine 80% of the time.  The problem becomes...What happens to the other 20%?  The answer can be-fetal, or maternal, death!  there are many ways to accomplish the goals of a home birth at the hospital, and still have the safety that a hospital brings.  While home birth can be a wonderful experience, is it worth the risk?

An OB/midwife: and a pediatrician for the baby! Midwives may do a great job delivering the baby, but are not equipped to handle any pediatric emergencies.Are they able to intubate (place an airway) and suction lungs  if the baby has aspirated meconium?  Would be good to have an O.R. too, in case of emergency C-section. People DO have home deliveries, but it is risky, and I would NOT recommend it unless no choice

Mindset : Like those that chose to ride without a seat belt some folks are convinced that nothing bad can ever happen to them. Some midwives push the "you control everything" idea & set it up like a cocktail party. Sad that the kid gets no vote in the matter. They think they can go to the hospital if things go bad, not realizing that the delay may put junior in a grave or a wheelchair.
