Which herb?: Some herbs are harmless and others are toxic. You need to identify the plant or herb to get a specific answer. May I add that other than lightening your wallet, these herbal things are not likely to do you any good.
For good health - Have a diet rich in fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, milk and milk products, nuts, beans, legumes, lentils and small amounts of lean meats. Avoid saturated fats. Drink enough water daily, so that your urine is mostly colorless. Exercise at least 150 minutes/week and increase the intensity of exercise gradually. Do not use tobacco, alcohol, weed or street drugs in any form. 
Practice safe sex, if you have sex.

Variable: This depends on specific product, constituents being extracted, how well your system is able to absorb things, and conditions being addressed.  Tinctures are usually more easily absorbed than capsules, since your body needs to digest & assimilate the capsule & its contents. The taste of some tinctures can be very strong, & there's also often alcohol in them.  Take great care in selecting products.

Persistent cough: Persistent coughs may be from acid reflux.  It is often silent other than the cough.  You can try raising the head of the bed at night, and reducing acid causing foods.  I hope this helps.

Other are milder synthetics that do act like marijuana. You are playing with fire.
