Finish antibiotics: Did she finish any antibiotics given to her for the left ear infection?It's very important to finish all antibiotics when given...this may help clear up the right infection OR she may need a different antibiotic if the first one isn't working.It is not uncommon to have a runny nose and/or cough with an ear infection.Encourage plenty of fluids and Acetaminophen or Ibuprofen for pain.Have Dr confirm

Several options: A lingering cough after a cold can sometimes mean wheezing is present - Dr exam needed to be sure.  But if phlegm present an antihistamine like diphenhydramine @ night or cetirizine can help cough.  Good hydration with fluids also helps. Definitely call Dr if fever or shortness of breath occurs

Infection usually: Any infection that causes irritation to the respiratory system will cause a productive cough with sputum. It is your body responding to the infection. Unless you are running fevers or it has been going on for more than two weeks you can probably just wait it out for it to heal.If it has lasted more than two weeks then see your dr. Or if you are running fevers have shortness of breath or pain.

Cough in less than 2: It is best to not use cough and cough suppressants in children under 2.  Most of them are not recommended for children under age 4.  There are natural remedies like zarbees that contain honey and can be used in children greater than age 1.  Also simply just try a cool humidifier and nasal saline drops for symptomatic relief.

See Pediatrician : You did not say how old your child is or if he has a history of asthma or bronchitis. Do not give any “cough medicine “. None of the OTC cough medication work in children and some are harmful. See your Pediatrician. Give lots of fluid to drink. Keep in bathroom and run the hot shower. The steam helps to loosen the phlegm.

Possibly: It's difficult to say  as dry cough could mean you are getting better. If there is no fever, shortness of breath, chest pain you can wait but perhaps a check up with your doctor is indicated ?

Stepwise workup: Are you short of breath? Is your cough worse at night? Do you wake up coughing? Are you underweight? Do you have night sweats or excessive sweating? A chest Xray is cheap and should be the first step. An Office Spirometry similarly is an easy test to R/O Asthma or Chronic Bronchitis caused by smoking. Nocturnal Gatric Reflux is also a common and easily ruled out condition.

Cough: You may have a post nasal drip that is causing your phlemy cough. Use saline nose drops 4 times a day. Keep your vaporizer on and sleep with several pillows.
