how and where do i get/take the western blot hsv-2 test? all i can find is the elisa hsv test.

U of Washington: HSV Western blot is done almost exclusively at the University of Washington in Seattle, where the test was researched and developed. It's generally the best test to confirm an uncertain HSV blood test result, but often other tests (e.g. inhibition, immunoblot, BiokitUSA) are adequate and available at routine labs. If your doc recommends WB, s/he can contact UW lab for a test kit and instructions.

my hsv-1 igg showed high positive(22.5). but i never had any outbreaks or symptoms yet. so not sure its oral or genital. should i get pcr blood test or any other confirmatory test like western blot to confirm hsv-1 status?

: There is no such test. The only way to know the anatomic site of your HSV1 will be if you have an oral or genital outbreak. Too many questions on this topic. Just live with it, like the billions of other people with positive HIV tests do routinely.

: I can't comment on the very unusual situation of the case you cite, but you definitely can trust the HSV Western blot test. The combination of all negative results (PCR swabs, IgG and WB) shows you do not have genital herpes and that something else is responsible for the "small splits".

i got the herpes western blot test done with university of washington at 12 and a half weeks post exposure as terri warren said 12 weeks is long enough to wait. it came back negative for hsv 1&2. what are the chances i just dont have antibodies yet?

: Almost zero. You can safely believe you are not infected with either HSV1 or HSV2. Check back with Terri if you have further questions about it.

Diagnostic test: The western blot is a test that identifies proteins from an infectious agent.  Probably the best example is the HIV western blot, which is used to confirm a diagnosis of HIV infection in people with positive screening tests (elisa or eia).  The screening test can be  falsely positive, but in those cases the western blot will be negative.

Lyme Disease: Lyme disease is known to inhibit the immune system and twenty to thirty percent of patients have falsely negative antibody tests.

Lyme disease has always been a challenge to accurately diagnose in ALL patients with labs. It has to be correlated clinically as there are many false negatives and cases that slip through our fingers.

Not great: But it is used to diagnoses lyme disease as it is one of the better tests we have. The cdc recently stated it believes lyme infections are about ten times higher than predicted due to false negatives related to current testing. Hope that helps!
