When you squatted your patella( kneecap ) subluxated transiently and 'reduced' spontaneously. That's the 'pop' you felt or heard. See your orthopedic surgeon for definitive diagnosis and treatment. Patellofemoral dys.: What you are experiencing is probably due to either prepatellar bursitis (some swelling on the outside of the patella) or inflammation of the back of the patella where is contacts the groove in the femur. A physician can help sort this out for you.

Needs evaluation: Knee pain is tricky especially if you are young and athletic. Although breaking bones can happen usually it is the soft structures like the cartilage, the ligaments, the tendons that can cause pain when bending and extending. I would suggest a face to face exam. Your doctor can then recommend the proper test which may include an X ray or an MRI. Good luck.

Therefore, assuming this to be true, I would strongly recommend you contact that orthopedic surgeon by phone and just ask that question to get the most reliable answer for you and your situation.

Try some upper body : Exercises with light weights and swimming and biking which are less jarring on your knees. Cutting down on carbohydrate and fatty intake and drinking lots of water would help with weight loss.
