can cancer cause severe edema? if so what kind of cancers can cause you to retain fluid. all other tests were normal. i need help.

Accepted Answer

Yes: Generalized edema is due to low Albumin levels in the serum and not frequently seen with cancer.  Edema of the extremities can be caused by cancer in the pelvis obstruction the return flow of blood from pressure on in iliac vessels. This js a  more frequent finding.

how much time for incurable breast cancer that has spread to the bones, the spine and lymph nodes which have caused edema in the arm?

Accepted Answer

Possibly long time: One of the sites of metastatic breast cancer that responds to newer chemo drugs is osseous involvement.  All depend of course on hormone status of the tumor and whether it is triple negative or responds to herceptin/taxol. 
I now believe that what is in the nodes such as axilla stay in axilla and if not removed may cause the swelling of the arm. Age here is also a factor.

my dad has severe water retention with swollen ankles and legs.  he was just diagnosed with lung cancer.  how can he be helped with the endema?

Elevation: You dad is in a difficult position and he has my sympathies.  Lung disease can be difficult.  He should speak to his physician to see if diuretics might help, but in th meantime, he can elevate his legs to help minimize the fluid retention.

Makes no sense: Edema is the build of fluids in the body or regions thereof. Are you thinking of something else? Best of luck.

Possibly: There are other causes, but "stoney hard" is very worrisome. You need to have an ultrasound exam done. Testicular cancer is not impossible so get it done right away as it is a very treatable and often curable form of cancer.

Liver/biliary proble: Jaundice and abdominal swellings are signs of liver problems- could be due to liver failure, cirrhosis with associated fluids accumulation on the abdominal cavity ( ascites), could be from cirrhosis +/- mass/es in the liver, could be obstruction on the biliary ducts etc. There are many serious possibilities. Definitely, you would need to see you md- asap and have further evaluation and treatment.

Hydrocele v common: Most men think erroneously think scrotal enlargement is testicular enlargement. Hydrocele (fluid around testsis) is most common cause of enlargement. Varicoceles &amp; spermatoceles (epididymal cysts) both also common. Testicular cancer feels like a hard lump actually in or on testicle. Testicular cancer can also induce a hydrocele, hence advice to get scrotal ultrasound to diagnose intra-scrotal mass

You need a good doct: You should be seeing a physician who can measure the size of the lymph nodes and follow them once every month or two and look for changes in the size. If the size does not increase, you do not need to do anything. If the size is steadily increasing a biopsy of the lymph node may be indicated to find out the cause. We can not exclude cancer of the lymph nodes without a biopsy....If the node is &gt;2cm.

i have found a bump in my armpits last. night it is not too big and it does not swelling. is this some kind of cyst or cancer?

Temporary: Lumps could occur from lymphatic's, or sometimes a reaction  to deodorant. Other people get recurrent gland infection. If they persist, enlarge or hardened, have them checked by your doctor.

why after a total removal of the thyroid are we (me & my sister) experiencing swelling in feet and ankles?  removed due to cancer

Accepted Answer

Edema: Swelling may be due to hypothyroidism, i.e. Low levels of thyroid hormone. Labs should be able to tell if you are getting enough supplement therapy. There are many other reasons for swelling in the legs as well. Discuss with your doctor. May need further work up.
