Snapping hip: The most likely cause is a muscle on the outside of your hip called the tensa fascia latae that extend more distally to form your illiotibial (it) band that "pops" rather than glides over a bony prominence in the upper part of your thigh bone (femur).  The pop/ clunk feels like your hip is dislocating. The illiopsoas (hip flexor) muscle on the front part of the hip can also produce a snap.

Unclear: 'Hip' is a nebulous term which can mean top of the femur bone, pelvic crest, etc.Treatment depends on diagnosis.Top of femur bone pain could be bruise, tendon inj., fracture, inflamed nerve,etc.Trochanter could be any of those plus things like bursitis.A good history &amp; phys. incl osteopathic hands-on exam may provide some answers.Treatments may incl meds, heat/cold, prolotherapy, manipulation, etc

Let it heal: Most pulled or sprained ligaments just need rest and some icing. If they do not feel better with just rest then you may need some physical therapy but i would wait ap. 3 weeks.
