Pillow mark: This is most likely due to sleeping on your side.  Most people turn in their sleep a fair amount so even if you don't start off as a side-sleeper, you may end up that way.  Having your neck on the pillow would make one side warmer than the other.

Neurological: There are a variety of nerves running along the sides of your face. Any hot, burning, cold, tingling, painful jolt, or crawling sensation could be the result of improper stimulation of this nerve = parasthesia. If this is a recurring sensation or you have strange sensations in multiple areas, it might be time to see a neurologist. They can do nerve testing and determine the underlying cause.

Some thoughts: cannot say in your particular case, but generally, infection and / or inflammation would be causes of warmth. THis can be due to a skin infection, collar rubbing, reaction to something on neck (detergent, jewelry). It can also be a reaction by the local nerves but this is not at all common.

It could be Flushing: If you have this symptom for more than a few weeks(like for a few months) then you should go see a physician as you will need a physical examination and tests to find the cause of these flushes and skin redness. : There is the large jugular vein and the large carotid artery on both sides of the neck. Also there are muscles and lateral lobes of the thyroid gland on both sides. For peace of mind have an examination of your mouth,throat and neck by your MD or an ENT specialist.

hi, when i woke this morning i tried to sit up and felt a pop and it was followed by a warm liquid like sensation, my neck is stiff now and it is like i can still feel the liquid feeling but it is no longer warm, i have been getting headaches too?

: The pop could have been a movement of your spinal column bones and it could have pinched a nerve in your neck. Any feelings of hot or cold, liquid or skin crawling is typically neurological. Rest and ice your neck area, take Ibuprofen for pain relief and to decrease inflammation. If the pain has not resolved in 1 week, consult a back/neck specialist.
