why on earth might one of my ears (left) be red and warm while the other is normal looking/feeling?

Accepted Answer

Not sure: If painful, then infection is certainly a possibility.  Positional changes to blood flow dynamics may be responsible (should resolve with sitting or standing upright).  Could be mild rash related to contact trigger on one side.  If at all bothersome, by physically examining the ear in person, a physician can help.

every so often, one of my ears (either one, but never both at the same time) turns bright red and feels very warm. no other symptoms. should i worry?

Accepted Answer

Don't worry: It is probably nothing but a vascular tendency like blushing. But an exam might discover if it is a sign of polychondritis which is rare and very unlikely w/out other symptoms. Chondrodetmatitis: Chondrodermatitis nodularis chronica helicis (cnh) is a painful inflammatory condition affecting the ear. It is sometimes called winkler disease.Cnh is most often seen in middle-aged or elderly men but may also affect women and younger adults. It results in a benign tender lump in the cartilaginous portion of the ear. The helix (thus helicis) is the top of the ear.

why do the outer rims of my ears feel warm to touch  and have red itchy small bumps ?

Red itchy rash ears: Often ears are first to be affected if there is an allergic reaction to hair dye. Ears are swollen, red & itchy with small vesicles. Ingredient in hair color that does it is paraphenalinediamine, component of hair dye that gives it black color, present in all hair dyes except bleached blond. If this happened after dying your hair, please see derm as reactions can be severe & worse w/each exposure.

hello, i squeeze my nose and hold. then i blow my nose. air usually sounds like it comes out of my ears but my left ear seems like it s cloged. what?

Eustachian tube.: You may have problems with your eustachian tubes in your ears.  They may not be working properly and causing the plugged feeling in your ear.  The sound in your ears when you blow against the closed nostrils is air being forced up this tube.

for fours days already i've been feeling that my ears are 'stuffed' and i feel there's a certain pressure on my skull , front and sides. it's like i'm on a flight but can't get the air out of my ears,i thought it's something with my ears but nothing?

: your ears may be plugged with wax. but a few drops of hydrogen peroxide for a few days. If not better you will have to see a ENT doctor for exam and management

OTALGIA: Neck stiffness can be associated with ear infection. Why don't you check it out?  Otherwise take analgesic or nsaids.

i woke up in middle of night with severe ringing in both of my ears that is so loud it completely overwhelms me. it lasts only a minute but it builds to a point so loud it feels like my ears are being zapped. this is second time its happened?

Tinnitus: Tinnitus is a very uncomfortable condition. It is frequently traced to inner ear hair cell damage caused by exposure to loud sounds, whiplash, head injuries, too much ear wax, or medication side effects. It can worsen with age, dehydration, and specific diseases (Meniere's disease, high blood pressure) Treatment involves addressing the underlying cause. Talk to your Dr for exam, tests &amp; treatment.

Move lower jaw: It may be a eustacian tube that is clogged on that side, or it may be wax or debris in the outer ear canal.
Open your jaw half way and move your chin from side to side...This may open the eustacian tube. Try a decongestant, also.
Have someone check your outer ear canal for wax or debris. You may need to irrigate the ear canal to remove debris.

i always have flaky things coming out of my ears. what is it?

Skin and wax: You may have some eczema of the ear canal. The ear canal is lined with the same lining as the rest of your body... Any skin condition that can affect your skin, can affect the lining to your ear. Try some moisturizing cream just inside the ear canal. Do not use q-tips... Apply with your finger tip.
