Vent. perfusion scan: Perfusion ventilation scan is used to define certain lung diseases.The most common use  for diagnosis of pulmonary embolism.Scanning combines  ventilation scan, usually  radioactive gas xenon 33, and   tc99m maa (particles injected intravenously) for perfusion. Typically compares areas of deficient perfusion with areas of ventilation. Embolism usually multiple perfusion defects not ventilated.

Ventilation: Ventilation part of study is inhaled gas such as xenon 33. Perfusion portion of study with tc99m maa is injected through peripheral vein such as arm. Volume of injection is quite small.

The ventilation part (v of v/q) which consists in inhalation of 99mtc-gaz or aerosols and the perfusion part ( q of v/q) which involves the intravenous injection of 99mtc-maa which are used to see the perfusion of the lungs. Usually a lung scan is performed to detect pulmonary emboli ( blood clots in the lungs) or to perform a preoperative evaluation

Not realy very: Ventilation/perfusion scan (v/q scan or lung scintigraphy), which shows that some areas of the lung are being ventilated but not perfused with blood (due to obstruction by a clot). This type of examination is used less often because of the more widespread availability of ct technology, however, it may be useful in people who have an allergy to iodinated contrast or in pregnancy.
