Accepted Answer

No: I am guessing that you extracted some vitreous gel from an animal eye in a laboratory or school project.  It is an inert gel of with no dangerous properties.  If human vitreous, then your eye or someones eye is ruptured and a critical situation has occurred.

See below: If you mean when the vitreous humor detaches, that is a normal aging change. However, new/worse floaters require a dilated retinal exam to rule out retinal tears or retinal detachments.

Accepted Answer

Many things: The aqueous enters and drains continuously supplying oxygen and nutrients to the eye interior, especially the front of the eye.  It also maintains the pressure at a constant level which allows the optics to work.  The vitreous is an inert gel which, holds the back of the eye in shape and absorbs the energy of hits to the eye preventing damage to the back of the eye.

if black floaters are related to age then how come i am only 21 years of ages and can see them? did the vitreous gel already get damaged by 21?

Black floaters: Floaters can occur at any age, such as after an accident or any trauma.
You can have surgery, and have them removed, usually with time you will get used to. 
Eye floaters, when seen, usually appear to have some slight. They generally appear to dart away when you try to focus on them.
Eye floaters can appear in many different shapes, such as:
•	Black or gray dots
•	Squiggly lines
•	Threadlike strands, which can be knobby and semi-transparent
•	Cobwebs
•	Ring shaped
Once you develop eye floaters they usually do not go away, though they tend to improve over time.
Most eye floaters are caused by small flecks of a protein called collagen.
The back compartment of the eye is filled with a gel-like substance called vitreous humor.
As you age, the vitreous and its millions of fine collagen fibers shrink and become shred-like. Shreds can accumulate in the vitreous. The clear vitreous gel which completely fills the back of the eye earlier in life decreases in size and no longer can fill this space, it pulls away from the retina and it is often the areas of previous attachment to the retina which are seen as floaters as they now float freely in the vitreous gel.

vision impairment/vitreous issues. how bad or big are floaters that require surgery?

Depends on symptoms: Floaters really don't require surgery.  Surgery will be elective.  Even modern 25 guage vitreous surgery is not without complications, however.  There is still a 1% risk of retinal detachment and a very high likelihood of the development of cataracts.  My own vitrectomy was not done until after my cataracts were removed in spite of a lifelong history of very bothersome floaters.

i think i have vitreous floaters but in the last year the amount of black lines/spots has double.is there anything i can do about it?

See eye doctor: Increase in floaters is one of the indications of retinal tears. You should consult an ophthalmologist, preferably a retina specialist.

Risks and benefits: Floaters in the vitreous are a natural phenomenon and very common. Although they can be irritating, they are fairly benign once the detachment of the vitreous is complete. With any eye surgery there are always risks when incisions are involved. With vitrectomy surgery there's risk of infection, bleeding, development of cataract, possible need for further surgery, retinal detachment and others.

i've had 2 post vitreous detachments this year - now have large floaters, which can obstruct my vision. i'm told vitrectomy is too risky. suggestions?

Talk to eye doctor: Your eye doctor would be your best source of information on your options.  You can ask him if lasering the floaters may be an option.

do all people who develop floaters suddenly experience a posterior vitreous detachment later on in life?

Accepted Answer

: Intraocular floaters are secondary to many reasons, including the consequences of a vitreous detachment.  Floaters at a younger age do not predict inevitable vitreous detachment in "all people".
