Rx and OTC: You may have to take a prescription antiviral medication if you experience regular outbreaks. While we aren't exactly sure why outbreaks can be more frequent, we think that avoiding certain triggers like excessive alcohol, fatigue, sun exposure, and stress might help. Two otc supplements that might help lower outbreaks (but not transmission) are l-lysine and lauricidin.

Accepted Answer

Maybe increase dose: Valacyclovir (Valtrex) is quite effective in reducing the frequency of herpes outbreaks, but not perfect; many people still have outbreaks but at reduced frequency. If that's what's happening, ask your doctor about doubling the dose. The usual dose dose is 500 mg once daily, but 1 g daily often helps and i's harmless (except increased cost). Good luck!

Pills do, not creams: Cold sores are caused by herpes viruses which reside inside your body/nerve. The currently available creams/topicals can only treat, not preventing it. There are few pills you can take to suppress the frequency/severity of these outbreaks. Unfortunately, there is no cure yet. If you have frequent recurrences, consult doc for eval and treatment. ...: Genital herpes can be treated with several different medications including acyclovir, Famciclovir and valacyclovir. Treatment can be offered as the outbreaks occur. But if someone has multiple frequent outbreaks, consideration can be given to suppressive therapy (i.e. Take medication daily to prevent outbreaks). Talk to your doctor about your options.

i'm not sure if i'm having a second outbreak of herpes. i was recently (may 2017) diagnosed with herpes and i'd also like to know if my acyclovir will prevent future shedding?

It is possible: It is possible to get recurrence of Herpes Simplex.And yes acyclovir or another anti viral antibiotic daily will prevent future viral shedding,Consult your Doctor

Herpes: Yes.  It is possible to have an outbreak of herpes during delivery even if you are on suppression therapy.  Under these circumstances, a cesarean section is often performed.

thank you doctors. infected with hsv1, do i need to take medicine if i have no symptoms and not feeling an outbreak? or is meds only for symptoms? should i take meds to prevent future problems like eye herpes or any other issues caused by herpes?

: There is no cure for hsv but there is antiviral therapy for prevention of outbreaks or to treat actual outbreaks. You can spread the infection from one part of your body by touching outbreak lesions and then touching yourself in another part of your body. Worldwide 90% of people will test positive for hsv1.

Makes no difference: Vitamins do not influence the natural history of herpes disease. Herpes may need medication. However, vitamins are just a waste of money. And obviously there are no tests. Check with your doc if you need two or more doses of valacyclovir.

No shortcut: cetain infections will leave either hyper or hypopigmentation. I am not aware of a cure for herpes induce hyperpigmentation.

Accepted Answer

Lysine can be used: to quell herpes outbreaks but I know of nothing that will totally eliminate it.  Stress is also a factor.  An overall healthy lifestyle w/exercise and good food plan is best.  Peace and good health.  Avoid nuts and chocolate and anything w/arginine in it.
