What medication?: You haven&#x27;t supplied any info about the medication you&#x27;re talking about.  Although the risk to your health would be low, it&#x27;s hard to answer correctly without that info.  Some meds shouldn&#x27;t be combined with B12 for absorption reasons, etc. If you want us to try again, re-ask and include the medication you&#x27;re wondering about.

Why deficient?: Thanks for writing. I trust this is laboratory-proved. You are in danger. If you have become B12 deficient through a vegetarian diet, i hope you'll reconsider this lifestyle, which despite much hype actually offers little benefit and many dangers, or that you'll supplement. If you have a problem absorbing B12 (several possibilities), it's a lifetime on injectable b12, which isn't bad. Good luck.

Yes: You can take Vit B12 with your anti-Rabies vaccine Rabipur. There are no special precautions of foods or otherwise, required while completing the series of shots.  Just take them on time as advised by ur physician.

i was told by my doctor to start taking vitamin b complex. i purchased some at the drug store and noticed the vitamin b12 in it has 15 mcg, is that to much vitamin b12? will it give me jitters and cause my heat to race?

: It is unlikely that you will ingest too much vitamin B12 because excess amounts leave the body through urine. If your urine is bright yellow, it is most likely that you are taking in more B vitamins than you really need.  Expensive urine, but not dangerous.

Virtually nontoxic: At any dose. I do not believe that you will find very much written on the toxic effects of B12 although I have had a couple of patients who took something on the order of 10x what I had prescribed them was already in the 10,000IU range so they were taking about 100,000IU daily for several weeks and the patient developed diarrhea. No useful half life.: Typical half life does not make much sense since the vitamin is not strictly "metabolized." It is taken up by tissues and converted by tissues to the active form- methylcobalamin.  Stored in liver and bone marrow- less so in other organs.  Once these sites are full, the remainder is excreted at a rate dependent upon state of hydration, other meds, etc.

Wrong question: Why ask this? There is no toxic dose of B12. You will absorb only a tiny fraction of these very large doses.  Why are you taking it? Most of the time 250 will be about the same as 1000. You can take the 250mcg any time.Since this is in many foods and is even produced by intestinal bacteria, a clinical deficiency occurs only in special circumstances. Vegan diet. How often?: There are no known illeffects from overdose of vitamin B12, but you would be wasting your medication and money. If you need to take vitamin B12, you should take it as an injection and and injection of 1000 micrograms (not milligrams) each month, is more than enough.

my ferritin is low 5.5 and my vitamin b12 is on the end of low but not considered low yet. are they linked together?

Could be: Deficiency of iron and B12 could be due to poor dietary intake or malabsorption. It would be prudent to consult a GI specialist for an evaluation. There are many good gastroenterologists at UPMC.
