That is really : Dependent on the mechanism that caused the fractures &  your continued exposure to such environments ( extreme sports)  as well as the underlying density of your bones which can be affected by diet, body weight, and underlying medical conditions.  All bones heal & to  original strengths, although some may be mechanically compromised if there is significant residual deformity leading to higher risk.

Most orthopaedic spine surgeons are well skilled in dealing with adult deformity work, some neurosurgeons as well. 1st question is do you need surgery, if so, what surgery will best address your problem. There are many types of osteotomies we use to correct deformities. 1st step: go see your closest orthopaedic spine surgeon.

No: Not in otherwise normal bone.  It is more likely that if you felt a crack or pop, that it was coming from your facet joint which is not dangerous or uncommon.

Trauma to spine: There are a few places on the vertebra that have cartilage. These are the area where the disc attaches to the bone and where the different vertebrae attach at the facet joints. A fracture of cartilage would most likely be associated with a broken bone as well.

Yes: Trauma of any kind can cause vertebral fractures.
There can also be problems with bone density causing fractures with minimal trauma.  To have the fracture as a result of the fusion would be unusual but not impossible.

Accepted Answer

Varies: It varies somewhat on the exact procedure being done.  If your wife is having two cervical disc removed, and having a disc replacement performed; these are inherently stable when inserted and patients are usually completely healed by 2 weeks.  If a fusion is done, a healing process of 8-12 weeks must occur before full recovery.  I would certainly ask your surgeon for more specifics.  Thank you.

Starting : Starting to exercise is hard on the body especially when you were inactive.  It sounds like the "insanity" workout is too stressful on your back.  You would probably benefit from stopping "insanity" and then start with a beginner workout and slowly build up to "insanity".  Last thing you want is to hurt your back.  I would discuss your pain with your primary care doctor, physical therapist and trainer.  Good luck!

Long term: Complications include pain and degenerative changes above and below the fused vertebrae. You can also develop scarring issues in the area. Avoid having this surgery unless there is instability or you have had absolutely refractory pain and cannot be functional anymore with the pain.
