Two main characteristics: I would refer you to csfinfo.org for a thorough description of signs and symptoms. Basically, it comes in two forms: Chiari (or Arnold-Chiari) Malformation and Syringomyelia. Symptoms are different for each, but both include neurologic symptoms. Arnold-Chiari S congenital, whereas syringomyelia can be part of Arnold-Chiari Malformation, or can be caused by tumors, trauma, or infection.

Review: When my patient's mri report comes back like that, I carefully review it with the radiologist, neurosurgeon, and a vascular surgeon to get as much information and advice as I can to see if further imaging studies should be done. This is a highly specialized situation that requires expert advice.

: Your description of the MRI depicts a minor disc abnormality which does not compress the spinal cord or emerging nerve roots, and indeed would be quite unlikely to cause any profound symptoms or signs.  Certainly, not a need for surgery or injections based upon your report.

mri- c5-6 there is apparent central bony bar abutting the ventral cervical cord. what does this mean?

May mean nothing : The bar is a bone spur. Caused by disc degeneration at that level.  It is a common finding and may not mean anything clinically.  The important question is whether or not there is actual spinal cord compression.  Per your question, it sounds as if the spinal canal is narrowed a bit (stenosis), but there is not any spinal cord compression. Frequently, pt and traction can be of benefit.

Not meaningful: These findings on MRI of c spine are simply indicators of arthritic phenomenon with aging or wear and tear. These may or may not clinically corelate with the clinical symptoms or signs of a patient. Examining and ordering physician is in best position to tell if these findings corelate with your symptoms. See a neurologist.

if a cervical canal is between 10mm and 13mm without actual compression of the cord, but reduced space. would this normally cause symptoms?

Accepted Answer

Typically, no.: If there is space around the cord, there should be room for the CSF (cerebral spinal fluid) to get by. If the nerve root is pinched, this could be problematic, however. Head or neck  Position changes could also be a problem for you. Discuss your symptoms  with your doc to get an accurate diagnosis of the problem.

Radiculopathy: Typically you will feel referred, burning, radicular pain in a dermatomal distribution, depending upon which nerve root is being compressed.

Abutment: is "NEXT TO" , "touching", unlikely to cause harm..  Compression is "pressing on", very likely to cause symptoms although the time frame is not known.

Accepted Answer

No: Loss of disk height is due to disk degeneration. Compression fractures are breaks in the main part of the bone (vertebral body).
