Merely resolution: Mri shows larger lesions, but due to the size of many nerves, may not be accurate enough to image.  Also, some nerves are mildly entrapped and images do not catch these.  But not always case, as often the images do visualize the nerve problem.  Matter of angles and cut width.  Your doctor should be able to explain in detail.

can you visualize in the mri views if the cranial nerves are encroaching in the skull base foramen?

MRI of cranial nerve: Mri can visualize the origins of the cranial nerves.  As the nerves exit the brainstem and enter various canals and foramina, they become smaller and a bit more difficult to visualize directly.  Not entirely sure what you mean by "encroaching in" the skull base foramen, but there can be direct/indirect findings on MRI if there is a problem with a cranial nerve at the skull base.

would a non-contrast mri show a tumor located on the skull? are there limitations? bony protrusion?

Accepted Answer

Depends: Depends on tumor. If there's a lot of calcium in the tumor then, contrast may not be needed to see it. If it's a meningioma then, contrast may not be necessary because of the Dural Tail sign seen on FLAIR images, however, contrast is generally given to PROVE it. But in other cases tumors may be hidden if small, no mass effect, and no contrast. Contrast always best if mass suspected.

pain at base of skull left side sometimes goes into my head did a mri 2months ago said no tumors what could cause this pain?

Occipital pain: An occipital neuralgia could be the source of your pain.  The sternocledomastoid, splenius capitus, and levator scapulae muscles all insert in that general area.  If the MRI is normal consider an extracranial source of your pain.

ct showed meningoma but mri didn't. mri showed a spot on skull that has a thick spot on bone being sent to a neurologist .should i be concerned.

Meningioma: Meningioma's are benign masses that are attached to the meninges.  These are mostly calcified, and at times can cause changes in the overlying bone if they come into contact with the bone.  Perhaps this is what is being seen on the mri, but needs confirmation by a radiologist.

in severe roll-over car accident. severe pain at (r) base of skull persists after 4 mths. can't turn my neck. work comp won't pay for mri. what to do?

Several options: You can ask your physician to try an supply further documentation in support of the indications for a mri.  You can ask your physician to obtain a second opinion to support this request.  If you have an attorney,  you can ask the attorney to get involved.  You can write to your local state elected representative to intervene.  If still denied, your insurance if you have coverage, then has to cover.

had an mri.. neuro doc checking for ms but they also found 2 masses on my head but not in the skull..could it be cancer?go back doc in a week

Maybe (not) . . .: I hate to say it but there's no use in speculating aside from preparing yourself for either outcome. So make use of your time to think about your healthcare goals eg 5 Wishes (http://www.fivewishes.org/). Advance care directives can always be changed depending upon what's happened/changed. Also, go see your FamilyDoc to make sure you're as healthy as can be regardless of diagnosis.

Concern: Any abnormal finding can be concerning.  I would not panic though.  The important thing is to follow up with the person who ordered the test.  Bring someone with you to help[ remember the answers.  Bring written questions too.
