Talk to your Dr.: The Basilic Vein travels both in superficial and deep tissues. The specific location of the blood clot will determine whether is is a deep vein thrombosis or a superficial vein thrombosis. DVT is an emergent situation and will be treated immediately. SVT is not emergent and can be treated a month later or more. Talk to your Dr for specifics on your imaging results or other diagnostic tests.

Veins vs. clots: Blue worms that are not painful are most likely to be varicose veins.  Pain and swelling, with or without varicose veins, is more liekly to be a blood clot.  Regardless, if you have varicose veins that are painful, you should definitely get it checked out by a vein specialist.

Vein specialist: Spider veins look like spider legs and are usually blue or red and very tiny(1-2 mm) and are several mm to cm long.  Varicose veins are large bluish colored veins that are grape-like in appearance.  Clots can be superficial on the skin , tender and easy to feel  or deep below the skin requiring ultrasound to see associated with pain and swelling.  You should see a vein specialist for an evaluation.

Very  different: Varicose veins are defective veins that have weakened walls. Blood clots can form in varicose veins, a condition known as "thrombophlebitis, " but the majority of varicose veins do not have blood clots.  Blood clots can also form in the deep veins, a condition known as dvt. This is a serious condition occurs more commonly after surgery, trauma, long plane/car rides, during pregnancy, among others.

outcome: A clot in an artery prevents blood flow to an area and if persistent, that area will begin to go through cell death.(gangrene) a clot in a vein can back up blood flow but the effect is less worrisome. If the clot breaks free it can travel through the heart to the lungs and cause part of the lung to be blocked.The bigger the clot, the more the effect.

Treat the thromboph: Anytime the veins are inflamed, there is a potential for thrombosis and thrombi can break off and travel to the right side of the heart and from there to the lung. However, the balancing system of thrombolysis can  dissolve the thrombus and anticoagulant drugs can prevent it from forming in the first place. Not every thromboembolus leads to death, especially if you have healthy lungs.

Yes - w/o treatment: Dvt can break free from your deep veins, travel through your bloodstream, and lodge in your lungs. This clot can block blood flow in your lungs, which can strain your heart and lungs.  This pulmonary embolism is a medical emergency. Dvt can also lead to chronic vein problems and swelling

treatment with blood thinners is very effective in reducing risk. Compression stocking also recommended.

Routine Activity: Routine exercise and activity will help to prevent stasis of the blood in the leg veins, one of the predisposing factors for dvt.  See your primary doctor for routine yearly exam, and if you have a family history or risk factor history, further testing may be recommended.  Varicose veins, swelling  can be helpful external signs of venous insufficiency which can be associated with dvt.

i'm an opiate iv addict. when i want to know if i'm in the vein, i pull back blood clots instead of blood. possibility to break and pullout the vein?
