why does diarrhea in infant/toddler make their skin red and sore? it seems to make their skin raw no matter how much diaper/vaseline i use.

Baby skin: Their skin is just much more sensitive to the irritation from the stools.  It is a challenge when they have diarrhea to keep them from having the irritation.  The only answer is to put a barrier on the skin - ointments with zinc are usually the best.  Good luck

doctor said i should use 3 times vaseline a day for over exfoliated lips , other medications may irriate more.whats your opinions on vaseline healing?

Not healing: Vaseline will protect the lips from drying while they heal themselves, but it doesn't actually "heal.".

Zind oxide: Irritative rashes from diarrhea in toddlers ae amongst the most stubborn rashes to cure. Try and get some daily air into that area - let him run around diaperless outside - who cares if he poops or pees on the lawn? Then, a diaper cream that has zinc oxide may be more useful - some brand names: triple paste, butt paste, desitin, (zinc oxide diaper cream) or generic zinc oxide.

See doctor: Unusual place for fungus but unlikely to be from allergy in the absence of itching.  Consult your doctor or a dermatologist.

Fingers work well: Application of unscented vasaline is a good skin protectant for infants. There is no special preparation needed, other than a basically clean skin surface to start.

I prefer it: I find the unscented vasaline a useful product & recccomend it as a protective barrier on the face & chin of teething babies.It is close to natural skin oil in its protective qualities.

I would not: A four month old has a tiny nose that reacts to any dust/fragrance/smoke/irritants with internal swelling and congestion.Please avoid Vicks.I NEVER recommend it before school age. Saline nasal wash can remove irritants and help, but removing sources of airway irritants is best for long term benefit.

Vasaline fine: I find unscented vasaline a great barrier skin treatment for kids prone to diaper rash.It may not help heal skin that is already broken down but does prevent it from worsening while the body heals. Cornstarch is often used by those who like the drying effect, but i find it more food for germs than a treatment.Once it is moistened by sweat it feeds pleanty of skin germs.I avoid it.

Go to a doctor: Baby's skin is very delicate and it is not good to treat it with things that are fine for older children and adults. A facial rash may not be serious, but it may be part of an allergic reaction or something else requiring a prescription. Make an appointment or visit an urgent care clinic to avoid problems. Vaseline does not sound good, but ask a druggist for a baby product that won't hurt.

i used vaseline as a lubricant and i'm 11 weeks pregnant. did i harm my unborn baby ?

No: Petrolatum jelly is inert and non-toxic.  It acts by providing physical barrier rather than pharmacological action.  Safe for you and the baby.
