Just to mellow out: Either med should work fine, but just take a small dose enough to mellow-out and not knocked-out. Prolonged immobility at high altitude increases risk of blood clot, so move around often when u can. Flying across time zones will likely cause some jet lag sx, so start sleeping earlier and earlier before flying east and later if flying west. This reduces time-differences. Melatonin may help.

Ask your doctor: If you're being treated for anxiety with lexapro, (escitalopram) it will take a few weeks to work consistently.  Your doctor is the best one to advise about any additional medication use, including valium.  Using this for sleep would be off-label.

Not drugs alone: Xanax, (alprazolam) especially at high dose, is not a healthy long-term option for you.  Evidently you have a good bit of tolerance already.  If you're using other substances in addition to your meds (including alcohol), stop.  Use good sleep hygiene steps in your day-to-day life. Depends,: The dose that's right for you should be determined by your md after a good evaluation of your insomnia. Insomnia is a very common disorder, sometimes caused by other disorders like depression. In this case your treatment may  an antidepressant instead.

Neither: Valium is a brand of diazepam which is member of benzodiazepine class, used to treat many conditions but not w/o side effects &amp; risks eg addiction, confusion, falls/fractures, even some link to Alzheimer's disease. Yes: That is a high single dose in my book. I can understand why your doctor wants to cut your dose.  Consider a trial of a medication that is not associated with development of tolerance for sleep.

Please don't: Benzos do nothing but destroy rem sleep.  Just wait the requisite 10 hours, sleep at 1am and promise me you will never take a psychostimulant that is long acting after 11am.   Take care.

No: Question one:  why are you taking Valium 20 mg per dose in first place.  Maximum recommended dose is 10 mg three times a day.  Two:  why are you on trazadone: insomnia, depression,,,?  You need to reconsider your treatment for insomnia.  Please your family doctor or a sleep center.  At 56 yo, that dosing of those meds, you may have a permanent rest.  Stop and see your doctor now!
