ureteroscopic stone removal - is there a stone size range limit?

Probably: It is hard to define perhaps, but one would know it when one sees it (to paraphrase an old saying). At some point a very large ureteral stone (rare) may be best managed by performing an operation to cut the stone from the ureter. Almost all ureteral stones are manageable via ureteroscope but it is the very rare case where the more invasive option may be advisable. This is a judgement call.

Usually.: Ureteroscopic procedures are performed in the operating room, with general or spinal anesthesia. With general, you are asleep. This is the preferred method, especially with stones high up in the kidney where breathing must be controlled. In spinal anesthesia you are numb from the waist down but  awake. This is usually reserved for those with issues that prevent full anesthesia.

Infection: You likely have an infection in your kidney and around the stent you should be seen today by your urologist, or if they are not available, at the emergency department.

good if stones come: After the manipulation with the ureteroscope and placement of the stent, whatever sediments that are sometimes not visible on ct scan or what ever the stone that got broken from the big nonobstructing one, they  come out&  it is good. Your urologist should be informed about the stones still coming out as based on that the need for rpt imaging, scopy, keeping the stent for more period will be decided.

See details: Usually one kidney at a time. Procedures would be either nephrolithoripsy or nephrolithotomy. Both procedures involve entering the kidney through a small incision in the back. Once the surgeon gets to the kidney, a nephroscope is threaded in through the hole. lf the stone is removed through the tube, it is called nephrolithotomy. lf the stone is broken up and then removed it is nephrolithotripsy.

Depends...: The procedure time for kidney stone removal widely varies depending on the size, density, &amp; number of stone(s) and how the stone(s) will be removed, such as ESWL with/without stent, percutaneous, or through urethra, ureter, to the kidney. So, it can be as short as 1-2 hours or as long as 3-4-5 hours. Generally speaking, such procedures are safe under experienced hands, and may require 2-3 entries.

So, it may take 5-7 days or up to 2-3 weeks. i have a kidney stone of 1.5 centimeters. my urologist wants to surgically remove it. is there any risk? what is the recovery time? what does recovery look like?

: A "kidney stone of 1.5 cm" is a large stone in the pelvis of the kidney.  This size stone is unlikely to be transmitted to the ureter intact, but fragments of this stone can be, which can cause significant pain/discomfort.  Removal of the large stone will not prevent future stones from forming, but will avoid episodes of pain by fragments in the ureter.  Get second opinion from another urologist.
