: Benign lipoma is my first guess. And I could tell if I could feel it. Show to your Dr.  no rush.

Bruising?: Presumably this is not traumatic. Consider Henoch-Schoënlein Purpura (anaphylactoid Purpura); Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpera (ITP). Go see a hematologist today!

Hematoma likely: If the local swelling or lump does not resolve over 7-10 days, you should have it evaluated by an orthopaedic surgeon. The most likely cause is local soft tissue trauma resulting in a local hematoma or fluid colleciton.

Medical check up nee: You need to have a medical check up from your doctor. Bruising can be from trauma/injury but you will know if that is in the picture or not. Unexplained bruising indicates possible bleeding under the skin for which there has to be a cause. Your doctor can check/examine you to find the cause of bleeding which will require blood tests including CBC(Complete blood counts) and some special  blood test

Trauma: Bruises after an injury are expected.  Without trauma or an injury the appearance of bruising is unusual and could be related to the use of blood thinners. A visit to the doctor if uncertain is recommended.

Bruising may be due:: To number of meds you might be on, eg Aspirin & blood thinners(coumadin, plavix). The pain might be due to a arthritis or a pinched nerve in the back. Get yourself seen by your doc to have a diagnosis.

Bruise: At your age it's still most likely that you bumped or struck the area and just didn't realize it, causing the bruise.  Alternatively, it could be a bug bite or, even more rare, this could be a sign of an underlying bleeding disorder.  For now i would give it time and conservative treatment, but if symptoms persist or worsen then see a physician.

Varies: There are a number of possibilities.  If it seems superficial and tender it could be a trigger point, which is felt to be an inflammatory condition or it could be a sebaceous or inclusion cyst; if it seems deeper, it could be a disc problem in your back.  I would not hesitate to be seen if it does not improve.

Bruises on spine: Check your daughters mattress. She may be restless or unconfortable while sleeping and bruising her back.
