: A discussion of these findings should come from the doc who knows the full history, exam and other test results. A simple interpretation of the wording is the size and shape of the bony spine parts result in a narrowing of the opening where the nerves exit from the spinal cord.

Degenerative: Basically refers to degenerative (aging) changes of the spine.  Disk/osteophyte refers to bone spur and/or disc protrusion (often can't clearly differentiate between the two), and facet/uncovertebral refers to the joints at the back part (facets) and sides (uncovertebral) of the cervical vertebrae.

Facet uncovertebral : There are 5 moving parts of each level of the spine--2 facet joints, 2 uncovertebral joints, and disc is the 5th. The joints protect the spine and spinal cord from abnormal motion or translation.  If the facet joint were to fracture or "break", it could lead to damage of the nerves/spinal cord. In everybody, as we age, the joints degenerate and lead to "changes" seen on studies.

Bone spurs: An osteophyte is just a fancy way to say a bone spur.  The uncinate process is a process that is present in the posterior aspect of the vertebral body in the cervical spine.  A simple way to describe the term is that you have mild arthritis in your neck.  Thank you for the question.

U got arthritis: Arthritis is a generic term for inflammation in the joint--rheumatoid arthritis=autoimmune disease where the body attacks its own joints. Septic arthritis = infection. Denegerative arthritis=wear & tear etc...Your xray probably looks like the one here. If you have much pain, follow-up with doc for meds, pt, and/or injections etc...Appropriate regular exercises can help. Consult doc. Good luck.

DJD w osteophytes: Degenerative joint disease (DJD) is the normal "wear and tear" kind of arthritis that we are all going to get as we get older in our most used joints. Part of the process of chronic arthritis is a remodeling of the calcium structure of the bone at the joint surfaces, which leads to accumulation of calcium away from the point of pressure. Ibuprofen will help discomfort from this normal process.

MRI: The radiologist is describing small spicules of bone that are causing some narrowing of the bony canal through which the nerve runs.  The mr findings would have to be correlated to your clinical findings and a neurologist might be helpful there.

: Your spine consists of multiple “blocks” of bones which support your body to stay erect.  In between each bone is a “cushion” made of a softer material (cartilage).  As we get older portions of this cartilage can protrude out and push on the spinal cord, causing back pain.  “Older” is a relative term - in some it can happen at 35-40, in others at 60-70.

Nerve root pain?: Osteophytes are the body's way of spreading out the pressure in an area in which a joint or disc is wearing out.  Sometimes those spurs can irritate nerve roots.  The body often will compensate over time however, if weakness, burning pain and numbness occur then you should seek evaluation and treatment by an orthopedic surgeon or neurosurgeon.
