my daughters pku came back with elevated tyrosine. a repeat test showed elevated again. we are waiting on plasma & organic urine results. noone seems alarmed but her father and me. tyrosinemia is serious to me.  are there other things that cause elevates

Tyrosinemia: Elevations in tyrosine may be the result of either a temporary process (until the metabolic process matures which takes tyrosine levels into normal range) or more serious metabolic concerns.  About 10% babies are born with the temporary metabolic immaturity. No treatment necessary. Depending on the type of tyrosinemia, 1/2000-1/100, 000 are born with it. Treatment is available if babies have this.

Considered abnormal: These crystals are uncommon in the urine and are an abnormal finding.  They are usually seen in patients with severe liver disease or genetic disorders involving tyrosine metabolism.

Probably not: Remember that all medications and supplements may result in side effects and it is individually dependent.  I would recommend taking a new medication at low dosages at first to see if you have any adverse reactions.  Tyrosine is not fda studied and is considered a supplement.  As a supplement, it is taken from 500mg to 1000mg per day.  Supplements may vary by manufacturer so always be careful.

Somewhat: Swedish medical center found some benefit for add with tyrosine, but the benefits lasted only a couple weeks. Also advised using acetyl-l-tyrosine instead of l-tyrosine due to fewer negative side effects & lower dose used. Discuss any supplements with fp before taking them to make sure there are no serious drug interactions with your other meds.

Yes, you can: Tyrosine is an Amino Acid that is used to produce noradrenaline and dopamine; supplemental appears to be anti-stress for acute stressors. Citalopram is an antidepressant medication that affects neurotransmitters. It is selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI) and no interaction with noradrenaline.
It is safe to take both medications. Hope it make sense?

Unknown: Assuming it has any effect on adhd, which is not established, it could take weeks or months to have any notable effect, since you are trying to build up brain supplies in the right areas high enough to overcome a presumed deficit in Dopamine or norepinephrine.  My professional opinion is that it is highly unlikely one would get a marked effect, ever.
