Yes: Type 1 diabetes is caused by autoimmunity, leading to death of the beta cells in the pancreas responsible for making insulin.  Once these cells are destroyed, the pancreas can longer make insulin, and type 1 diabetes occurs.

does a full blood count detect diabetes type 2 or diabetes type 1? is type  2 an autoimmune disease?

Accepted Answer

No: But a fasting blood glucose or Hgb a1c test would show diabetes. It does not distinguish between the two types of diabetes however.  Type 1 is often considered an autoimmune disorder but type 2 more a lifestyle issue- too much fat not enough exercise. Type 1 usually requires insulin and type 2 only on occasions (may reverse to normal with weight loss).

last month, my mothers type 2 diabetes sugar was 300. she didnt see this as important but it is alarming. how can i wake her up to her disease?

Insulin of 300 needs: to be treated by a doctor.  Please get some literature about diabetes from your doctor to give your mom, something short and to the point.  Perhaps she would be open to seeing a nutritionist.

No but: Type II diabetes is mostly from obesity and celiac disease is considered an autoimmune disease. Having said that gluten-free foods are often loaded with sugar and fat to keep the product moist and stuck together and leading to weight gain -&gt; DMII.  If your dad has CD symptoms and refuses to get a small intestine biopsy, he should at least get a blood test to check it out.

2nd form discovered: Type i diabetes was first discovered as an elevated blood sugar and then as a lack of Insulin production.  Later it was found that patients in there adult hood also had elevated blood sugar, but they over produce Insulin and are in an Insulin resistant state.  This second form was named type II diabetes.

Not yet: If your type 2 diabetes is being well controlled why try something else, particularly not fully covered by the Food and Drug Administration - to the best of my knowledge.

Not likely.: The Institute of Medicine publishes a biennial report on the Agent Orange issue.  There is limited but suggestive evidence of an association with diabetes (10% of the population has DM and very very few of them were ever exposed to AO) and no proposed evidence linking UCTD to paternal dioxin exposure.

i have stage 3 kidney disease gfr 34, went to dr wednesday and had labs done, labs show glucose 109 is it to late to stop it from type 2 diabetes?

Accepted Answer

No: 109 fasting is suggestive of pre diabetes although you do need another abnormal lab to make the diagnosis.  This is the best time for you to make lifestyle changes to reverse the course of sugar abnormalities.  If you make the right changes, you can go back to normal and not progress to diabetes.
