Weight Gain?: How much weight are you talking about and what is your weight to begin with?  There are metabolic conditions, specifically an overactive thyroid that can cause this that should be looked at by your doctor.  Parasites can also cause this.  Also consider the type of foods you are eating and your activity level, a balanced diet is going to be the best.

Doctor to evaulate: If one is truly underweight (based on height, family background, and body type), a Dr. can evaluate for a hormonal, digestive, or other disorder. If no medical cause is found, then one can add weight by eating more calories of nutritious foods, while also doing weight-training to increase muscle. Proteins: egg white, chicken breast, salmon,...  Better fats: olive oil, peanuts, almonds, tofu,...

Low carb: diet w/higher protein helps shift the body into ketosis.  That is the state wherein the body uses fat for fuel rather than sugar.  Please only do this w/doctor supervision.  Plant based diet is a good supplement to this.  Peace and good health.  Carbs turn into sugar.

Good for you: Controlling one's weight with a reasonable exercise plan and lifestyle changes in terms of diet is most healthy overall. On the other hand, dieting in general does not lead to life long weight control. Lifestyle works. Diets don't. Good luck.

Team approach: I've found the best results with weight loss come from places that take a multidisciplinary approach - the doctor working together with a nutritionist, and being supported by a group weight loss program like weight watchers.   There's no magic pill that gives sustained weight loss, but your doctor will first rule out other causes of obesity like thyroid.  Best of luck.

Possibly: You should have a check up with lab work.  Thyroid hormone levels, in particular need to be checked.  Also keep in mind any changes in liftstyle that may contribute.

Water weight.: This can happen quite easily with water weight gain, such as after a salty meal. We can seemingly gain up to five pounds overnight due to water weight - this weight tends to go away very quickly. We cannot gain that much actual body weight, or lose it for that matter, that quickly.

If you have had a: Very low caloric intake that has caused your metabolic rate to slow - sometimes you need to  ^ calorie intake back toward normal before weight loss can occur. (i.e. ^ metabolic rate).
