Identify the Agent: The best method is to do a urine culture. Identify the infectious agent and the right therapeutic agent. This will insure no lack of cures.

Varies: Depending upon the site of the UTI and the causative agent it may be as little as a day, or in the case of pyelonephritis, may be weeks.
