shoulder pain.  no chest pains or shortness of breath. i'm a hypochondriac so i always assume the worse. i have acid reflux.  trapped gas?

See a psychiatrist: If indeed you are truly a hypochondriac that can be a serious condition. Would encourage you to see a psychiatrist. In reference to your shoulder pain ,there's not enough information to make a comment.

Unusual : It would be unusual to have pain from " gas" that would last as long as a month.  It is more likely it is musculoskeletal in orgin.  Don't hesitate to be seen.

Yes: It can cause shoulder pain if the gas is causing enough pain upward around the diaphragm. However, this should be shortlived as the gas moves through the intestines and long lasting shoulder pain will most likely not be related to gas. The pain is from viscerosomatic referred pain. If the shoulder pain and abdominal pain lasts longer than regular gas is expected, further workup would be necessary.

Not Likely: Consider a muscle strain in the area of the effected shoulder.  Also consider some condition in the lung such as pleurisy.  Do you have any sign of an infection or have you strained your muscles recently.  Also, consider reflux espophagitis.  Do you get a sour taste in the mouth?  Consider cardiac pain.  How is your heart?

Could be: Pneumothorax or pneumomediastinum.  It is best for him to see a doctor for specific recommendation, because it can lead to breathing problems, which are true medical emergencies.

Unlikely: It is unlikely to be trapped gas but it could be from reflux. If you are having heartburn try an over the counter medication like zantac (ranitidine) to see if this gets rid of the sensation. It could also be musculoskeletal discomfort so try a heating pad and some gentle stretches to see if this will relieve the pain. If these suggestions do not work see your doctor

Trapezius spasm?: This sounds like your trapezius is spasming. Very common and very uncomfortable. You may need a trigger point injection or PT to help with this problem. Try ibuprofen for several days and see if it goes away first.

2-3 days: stabbing feeling in shoulder is probably trapped gas, it gets better.  Give it another day.

See MD: Have you been checked for a diaphragmatic hernia or hiatal hernia? That is when the stomach pokes up into the area where your lungs are above the diaphragm. This would be the most concerning possibility.  See your doctor. Good health.
