Virginal bleeding: Depends-while an "old fashion" way of telling if a woman was a virgin was if she bled during her first penetrative sexual encounter. However in todays active lifestyles and things like tampons its not uncommon for w-omen to still have intact hymens.   That being said you could still bleed-depending on how aggressive your partner is simply from trauma.   You need to discuss this with your partner.

May or may not bleed: The bleeding with first sex idea is overdone. Bleeding may mean fresh small tears. If a woman has a healthy vulva, vagina, and hymen; if she is very stretchy; if she is happy and relaxed, with lots of natural lubrication; if a guy enters at a good angle, at the right spot; if he moves gently with small motions until all is well-lubricated and stretched out; there may not be tearing or bleeding.

Yes: There a lot of blood vessels in the vagina. First time intercourse and rough sex can cause heavy bleeding.   If the bleeding doesn't slow down, see a doctor.

Not necessarily: There are many cultures that place a great emphasis on "Bleeding with first intercourse" as proof of purity.It is not. There are other forms of partner sex and virgins without a hymen or whose hymen is very open will not bleed with intercourse.

Makes no difference: This makes no difference in HIV risk. The only thing that risks HIV is sex with infected partners. Always use condoms for new partners or any non-monogamous sex.

Ignore the hymen: The hymen is a non-issue, and can be ignored. If a girl is on her period, then any and all blood on her tampon is presumed "period" blood. Whether or not any is from the hymen is not relevant. She can ignore her hymen, as it is what it is and will be what it will be. If there is bleeding in between periods, or bleeding that seems to happen each time with sex, the doctor can examine the genitals.

Unlikely: The normal hymen is a circle of elastic tissue around the vagina opening, like a stretchy bracelet. It's not a solid layer of skin except for rare condition of imperforate hymen where there's no opening and no way for menstrual blood to leave the body. If you've had periods, you haven't got an imperforate hymen. Likely there's another reason why sex is painful. Suggest see your MD for evaluation.
