i get frequent tonsilitis. right now i dont have tonsilitis but my tonsils are not the same size. no other symptoms other than tonsil stones. should i be worried for tonsil cancer?

Unlikely: at your age...and the size of your tonsils may normally vary from side to side depending upon a whole host of factors the most common of which is the number of infections they have "filtered".

Tonsils: don't have to be exactly the same size. BUT a peritonsillar abscess could shift things over. Check this awesome article:  http://emedicine.medscape.com/article/764188-overview ** if you have symptoms of peritonsilar abscess you  should get emergency eval.

i have a large hole in my tonsil from a bout of tonsil stones, will this hole close up? or will it stay the same size and produce more stones?

never looked at my tonsils until 3 months ago. when i looked i saw one is larger and diff shape than the other. larger one looks the same as 3 months ago. if it were cancer would it likely have changed in size in 3 months? sometimes it has dull aches?

: Stop looking. The right side of your body is not an EXACT mirror image of the left. If tonsil is not growing (over weeks or months) no reason to be concerned

Doctor can check: A sore throat can be evaluated by a primary care doctor (or an ear-nose-throat doctor) to see what the cause might be.  Sometimes it is a strep throat bacterial infection, in which case antibiotics would be needed. Other possibilities include a viral infection, a throat ulcer, allergies, stomach acid reflux, a tonsillar abscess, etc...  A doctor has to look at the throat to diagnose it.

By seeing the doctor: If a strep infection had increased the size of the tonsils, the doctor may treat with antibiotics. If a viral infection (such as mono) had enlarged the tonsils, the doctor may use a few days of prednisone. If the tonsils are always big, and the person is a child with no problems, it may be ok to just wait. If tonsils cause breathing, swallowing, sleeping issues, an ENT doctor might remove them.

No: Laryngitis refers to an infection of the larynx or the voice box. Usually patients are hoarse with it.  The larynx closes when we speak, swallow and cough.  Tonsils are like specialized lymph nodes and are part of your immune system.  In the mouth, you actually have four tonsils...The palatine tonsils (on both sides), the adenoid (in the nasopharynx) and the lingual tonsil (back of the tongue).

Tonsil size: Tonsils are graded in size from 1 to 4, depending on how they look when your doctor examines you. A size 1+ is barely visible, and a 4+ means the tonsils are so large they touch in the middle. Tonsil size itself doesn't really mean anything, the important thing is whether they cause problems - such as recurrent infections or interfere with your breathing at night, causing sleep apnea.
