Needs exam: Asthma patients can have significant complication of flu particularly when it attacks the lungs. The persistent cough is not as unexpected or worrisome as coughing up blood. I would encourage him to get in for an exam &amp; possible testing/x-rays.

Emergency ? !: Bleeding as you describe may be due to a local process  but hemoptysis as described may also be life threatening depending on its source (lungs, of greatest concern). Your sense of a persistent mass in your throat  with bleeding requires urgent attention.

May be-need to check: Airway irritation/ inflammation is the most common cause of coughing blood. Unless it's large amount, this should be self limited. However, if persists, definitely needs to be investigated further, As for being contagious- really hard to say, as viral respiratory infections usually are, but limited.

Not really: Pneumothorax should mostly cause severe sob and chest pain, coughing blood  can happen if it is    traumatic causing mure severe injury or some pts can have pneumothorax and hemoptysis ie catamenial pneumothorax.

Get checked: X rays will likely show glass if it is large and dense enough. See a doctor /urgent care or emergency room immediately.
