what is the definition or description of: tonometry?

Eye pressure measure: Tonometry is the technique for measuring the internal pressure of the eye.  It is done by ophthalmologists with a device called a goldmann tonometer which is the most accurate.  Optoms use air puff and there are a few hand held devices.  The measurement is used to detect glaucoma.

No: Ocular hypertension (glaucoma suspect), unless progressive damage to the optic nerve has occurred by the high pressure as measured over time by structural and functional change.

Accepted Answer

They Do not hurt: Gonioscopy, ophthalmoscopy and tonometry are all part of a complete eye examination and generally do not hurt. Topical anesthetic drops are instilled in the eye at the beginning of the examination. While the bright light of ophthalmoscopy may be briefly uncomfortable, it is generally not painful.

Tonometry=glaucoma: Tonometry checks the eye pressure looking for a disease called glaucoma (high pressure). To check: the eye is 'numbed' with drops and device attached to 'slit lamp' 
touches the cornea. Also a pencil-like device touches the eye and instantly records eye pressure.
Another method 'uses a puff of air' . Astigmatism can be found on a standard eye exam/refraction test  or 'astigmatism mirror chart'.

No: Those are very common tests done by ophthalmologist who are trained to perform them.  When done correctly, there is no pain at all.  The eyes are first numbed with an anesthetic eye drop and therefore, no pain is felt. During the tests, an instrument does come in contact with the cornea, but the patient cannot feel anything because the eye is numbed. Aprehension...Yes...Pain...No!

No.: These eye tests are not painful but the bright lights may be intense.  The tonometry may be startling (if it involves a puff of air) and if they have to contact your corneal, they will use topical anesthetic.

No: A tonometry test determines the pressure in your eye.  Astigmatism is most commonly determined with a refraction, the test to find your glasses prescription.

Accepted Answer

Usually applanation: Air puff was developed for optometrists when they wisely were not permitted to use eyedrops.  Because their skill level is less, they still prefer to use the air puff as it is less tricky.  But the airpuff is not as accurate - it is a good screening device.  Applanation is the gold standard, more accurate and precise but requires much more skill to use. So it is a tool of the ophthalmologist.

The latter: Goldmann applanation tonometry is the gold standard. Non-contact tonometry (nct) is often used when contact methods are not indicated and is inherently less accurate due lid interference, poor alignment of the eye or dryness.

Unlikely: This test, if done properly will do no harm to the eye or to vision.  Best to have your eye pressure measured by the highly skilled hands of an ophthalmologist.
