It is an older antibiotic and has more surface toxicity than the newer fluoroquinolone antibiotics.  It typically kills gram negative bacteria better than gram positive bacteria.

Part of treatment: Use of tobradex (tobramycin and dexamethasone) is a combination of antibiotic  and steroid which helps treat infection portion of sty and manage inflammation.  This plus adequate drainage is often effective.  You should see a local opthalmologist to manage.  Prolonged use of tobradex (tobramycin and dexamethasone) is not recommended due to risk of fungal infections, etc in the eye.

A full course: Of antibiotics is the only way to  become noncaontagious. This also depends on the infection and the bacterial susceptibility to the antibiotic. Do not stop taking the medicine just because you feel better. Complete the entire dosing regimen.

Not helpful: Chalazia are the end product of the body's attempt to defeat a stye.  They are an encysted nodule in the lid.  Tobramycin and other antibiotics will not enter the chalazion so they will have no effect.  Some chalazia spontaneously disappear, but if yours is obvious or troublesome, your ophthalmologist can suggest in office ways to get rid of it.

Glaucoma implies i: Glaucoma implies raised pressure inside your eye( intra ocular pressure). Tobramycin is an aminoglycoside antibiotic used to treat infections. Glaucoma is not listed as one of its side effects as far as I can remember. I am not sure what would be the mechanism of this effect

Antibiotic dosing: Your body breaks down antibiotics at a steady rate, and it takes a certain amount of antibiotic for it to work. If you were to only dose the tobramycin once a day, it will be too low to work in ~12-16 hrs; by using it twice a day, you keep it in your system & it works much better.
