i've been having tias and i have absence seizures. is there any preventative or medication my last doctor should have gave me? i no longer have insurance so i can't go back to my neurologist because she is expensive.

SUGGESTIONS: You do not list where you live, but in absence of insurance, city hospitals in large cities have numerous local and outreach clinics, which are good resources. If you do have paroxysmal neurological episodes, it is truly mandatory to use preventative meds. what is a series of "tias" and why might they kill my aunt!?

TIA: Some one can have series of TIA but still can survive. The definition of TIA is symptoms last less than 24 hours and will have full tecovery.

should someone in his late 80s (with history of tias) have his carotids checked?

Accepted Answer

Absolutely: Someone who is having tias should most definitely have their carotids checked since the carotid arteries are the number one source for embolic strokes. In "symptomatic" patients, such as someone who is having tias, a carotid blockage of 50% or more warrants intervention.

are strokes or tias caused by vasospasms?

Accepted Answer

Possible: While the answer is technically yes, most strokes and  tias are not caused by vasospasm but rather by plaque rupture, platelet aggregation,  and thrombosis.

is it bad if you have blackouts? are those tias or strokes?

Accepted Answer

Yes, and no: Yes it's bad if you are driving or on stairs or crossing a busy street, but it may be a slow heart rate or aortic stenosis and not a stroke.

i heard oranges are good for people at risk for strokes. are they good for tias too?

Accepted Answer

I suppose so: Strokes and tias are, at their underlying cause, basically the same thing.  Both involve clots impairing blood flow to brain cells.  Tias are just when the clot fortunately dissolves in enough time such that no permanent damage has occurred.  Oranges are in general probably good and better than foods with high salt, fat, sugar or cholesterol content.

had 2 tias. cholesterol was the cause. i had another tia and was told not to go to emergency but lie down and let it pass. what if it was a stroke?

Get another opinion : After a TIA, it’s usual to be put on meds, perhaps aspirin and persantine or some of the new stuff

are auras without migrains serious or brain tumors or tias?

Accepted Answer

A few caveats: Migraine auras are not indicative of TIA's or stroke risk, usually, BUT if a female smokes and takes oral contraceptives, the risk of stroke increases modestly.  There is absolutely NO link to brain tumors.

i have had 3 tias will a bleed show up on a mri without contrst or would it show up better with a mri with contrast? i am having more trouble with my balance , memory, speech and heart flurries

It : It depends on how long ago you bled.  Mri and ct will both show fresh blood without any contrast.

hi,i had several tias (mini stroke) 2 years ago. since this episode, for the past 2 years i've  had on and off numbness within the rear right head.
