how can you tell if you have a cracked or fractured rib and not just the cartilage pains?

Trauma or not?: If you sustained significant trauma to the rib/breast bone, then it is reasonable to suspect fractures etc...Otherwise, chest wall pain on the front without trauma is often called costochondritis--the rib-breastbone joints which are inflamed. The exact mechanism leading to this is not clear. 
Or if having cancer in bone and coughing really hard can fracture that area..Rare.

Conservative: basically you will need rest, anti inflammatory medications, and possibly use of a rib belt. It can take 3-6 months for healing.

Accepted Answer

: Because the various bones are holding tendons and are usually found within sheaths of tissue, the bones would not be expected to move very far. An exception would be if they somehow break through the tissue and skin.

Sc joint: Most sternoclavicular injuries are treat without surgery.  If you are doing well now without symptoms 3 mth after injury i would advance activity as tolerated.

Sounds broken: Sounds like you broke your nose.  I would definitely be seen to make you don't need intervention.

i have two cysts on my thyroid, diagnosed with osteopenia and have had three unexplained rib fractures. hyperparathyroidism? do i need to get checked?

Yes: Get in to see your doc. Ask about PTH/parathyroid hormone level. It is a simple blood draw, can be added on to other labs. Will answer the question. Take a friend or family with you to appointment to help with questions and answers.  Be well. Parathyroid glands are near your thyroid, usually need nuclear scans to detect on imaging. Only if, PTH level is up.

No: Hyaline cartilage has a very limited ability to heal. There are hosts of scientists looking at how to enhance its healing potential. However, there are no good ways to do it currently. If a fracture that enters a joint also damaged the hyaline cartilage, the best that can be done is to get the joint fracture repaired as anatomically as possible.

The Hyaline cartila-: Ge is found on the ends of the bones, as part of a joint.
I am unaware of this cartilage assisting in fx repair, if i understand the question.

i was diagnosed with a fractured thyroid cartlidge and a fractured hyroid in my throat back oct. how long does it take to heal and what about surgery?

Accepted Answer

Thyroid cartilage fx: If you have not been operated on by now, it probably would not work this far out. I presume an ear nose and throat doctor scoped you and determined that there were no laryngeal injuries. If so, there would have been an offer for surgery. If the fracture of the cartilage is non displaced, you do not have to fix it. Hyoid bone fractures are not repaired unless there is crepitus (sounds) with swallow.
